Silicon- and Boron-Induced Physio-Biochemical Alteration and Organic Acid Regulation Mitigates Aluminum Phytotoxicity in Date Palm Seedlings

Saqib Bilal et al.

Summary: The current study investigated the synergistic effects of silicon and boron application on date palm's physio-molecular responses to aluminum toxicity, revealing that the combined application improved plant growth, reduced aluminum accumulation, and enhanced the secretion of organic acids. The study also found that the combined application regulated the expression of genes related to organic acid activation, membrane ATPase, and Si transporters. Additionally, the combined application alleviated oxidative stress and downregulated the biosynthesis of abscisic acid and salicylic acid.

Silicon Alleviates Arsenic Toxicity in Maize Seedlings by Regulating Physiological and Antioxidant Defense Mechanisms

Muhammad Kashif et al.

Summary: The study found that the application of silicon can enhance the antioxidant defense mechanism of plants, reducing arsenic toxicity. Silicon application improved plant growth and gas exchange attributes, lowered arsenic accumulation and reactive oxygen species production, and enhanced membrane stability, chlorophyll pigment synthesis, antioxidant enzymatic activities, and proline accumulation. Applying silicon at a rate of 100 mg kg(-1) of soil may be the best option for sustainable maize production under arsenic toxicity.

Genome-Wide Identification and Characterization of Short-Chain Dehydrogenase/Reductase (SDR) Gene Family in Medicago truncatula

Shuhan Yu et al.

Summary: Short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) belongs to the NAD(P)(H)-dependent oxidoreductase superfamily and participates in diverse metabolisms. In Medicago truncatula, 213 MtSDR genes were identified, categorized into seven subgroups based on phylogenetic analysis, and divided into three types based on the cofactor-binding site and active site. Many MtSDRs show tissue-specific expression and contain cis-acting elements responsive to plant hormones and stresses in their promoters. Genes from certain MtSDR families are responsive to drought, salt, and cold, providing valuable information for future investigation on the biological functions of MtSDRs, especially in abiotic stress adaptation.
