Metabolomics-based comparative analysis of the effects of host and environment on Viscum coloratum metabolites and antioxidative activities

Rui-Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the effects of host and habitat on the metabolites in Viscum coloratum through multiple chemical and biological approaches. The results showed that the metabolite profile was influenced by both host and environment factors, with the environment playing a key role. The study also identified differential metabolites and found that the environment had greater effects on the biological activity of V. coloratum than the host. The integration of various approaches and analysis strategies is a powerful strategy for controlling the quality of semi-parasitic herbal medicine.

Viscum album L. Therapy in Oncology: An Update on Current Evidence

Anja Thronicke et al.

Summary: This update provides a brief overview of the use of VA preparations in clinical oncology, reviewing current guidelines, systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and real-world data studies. Evidence supports the use of add-on VA therapy to improve the health-related quality of life (HRQL) in breast cancer patients and to prolong survival and improve HRQL in pancreatic cancer patients. In the field of gastrointestinal, gynecological, and lung cancer, updating guidelines to include recommendations for integrative therapies including VA therapy is recommended. Further clinical and real-world data trials are needed in this field.

Viscotoxin and lectin content in foliage and fruit of Viscum album L. on the main host trees of Hyrcanian forests

Sanaz Yousefvand et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the quantity and quality of viscotoxins and total lectins in different parts of mistletoe plants. The results showed that the highest level of viscotoxins was found in the December foliage of mistletoe settled on Carpinus betulus, while the highest content of lectins was found in the December foliage of mistletoe settled on Parrotia persica and Carpinus betulus. The immature green berries contained higher concentrations of viscotoxins and lectins compared to the mature white berries.

Impact of Harvest Conditions and Host Tree Species on Chemical Composition and Antioxidant Activity of Extracts from Viscum album L.

Wioleta Pietrzak et al.

Summary: Research on mistletoe extracts shows that the chemical composition and antioxidant activity are influenced by factors such as the time and place of harvest, host tree species, and climatic conditions. Chemical analysis and statistical tools were used to evaluate the phenolic composition and antioxidant activity of mistletoe extracts, with findings indicating a rich phenol profile and high antioxidant activity. Chemometric analysis revealed that mistletoe collected from conifers had the most advantageous chemical composition and antioxidant activity, with higher levels of phenolic compounds found in extracts obtained in cold weather with snow and less sunshine.
