The Xanthomonas type-III effector XopS stabilizes CaWRKY40a to regulate defense responses and stomatal immunity in pepper (Capsicum annuum)

Margot Raffeiner et al.

Summary: Xanthomonas effector protein XopS enhances disease susceptibility by repressing defense gene expression and suppressing stomatal immunity through interaction with and inhibition of WRKY40, a transcriptional regulator. XopS manipulation of WRKY40 stability alters downstream gene expression and phytohormone crosstalk to promote pathogen proliferation.

Biological Control of Plant Diseases: An Evolutionary and Eco-Economic Consideration

Dun-Chun He et al.

Summary: Biological control is a promising alternative to pesticides and plant resistance for managing plant diseases, but a better understanding of its natural and societal functions is needed for endorsement. The introduction of biological control agents alters interactions among plants, pathogens, and environments, leading to cascading effects that influence pathogen fitness, plant health, and ecological function. Evaluating the benefits and costs of biological control from social and farmer perspectives is crucial for sustainable development and deployment, and a shift in disease control philosophy is necessary to consider multiple aspects such as crop productivity, ecological function, social acceptability, and economic accessibility.

A centenary for bacterial spot of tomato and pepper

Ebrahim Osdaghi et al.

Summary: The disease symptoms include water-soaked areas, chlorosis, and necrotic spots on plants, with host range mainly on tomatoes and peppers. The pathogen belongs to Xanthomonas genus and has synonyms like Bacterium vesicatorium, with gram-negative colonies found in general culture media. It is widespread in Africa, Brazil, Canada, the USA, Australia, eastern Europe, and south-east Asia.

Novel Small Molecule Growth Inhibitors of Xanthomonas spp. Causing Bacterial Spot of Tomato

Vishal Srivastava et al.

Summary: Novel small molecules were identified in this study as growth inhibitors of the Xanthomonas species causing bacterial spot in tomatoes. These molecules effectively targeted resistant strains while minimizing impact on beneficial bacteria. They showed equivalent antimicrobial activity compared to conventional methods and reduced pathogen populations in seeds and seedlings with no detectable toxicity to tomato tissues. Further research is needed to enhance the application of these molecules in managing bacterial spot in tomato production.
