Root metabolome of plant-arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis mirrors the mutualistic or parasitic mycorrhizal phenotype

Sukhmanpreet Kaur et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metabolic differences in the symbiotic relationship between different AMF (arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi) species and crop plants. The results showed that Rhizophagus irregularis formed a mutualistic symbiosis with plants, promoting phosphorus uptake and plant growth; while Gigaspora gigantea exhibited a parasitic relationship, inhibiting plant growth and producing antifungal compounds. Furthermore, when multiple AMF species were present, mutualistic symbiosis dominated.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi improve the growth and performance in the seedlings of Leymus chinensis under alkali and drought stresses

Yingnan Wang et al.

Summary: The interaction of alkali and drought stresses can exacerbate seedling growth inhibition, but arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can alleviate this effect. However, the interaction of these stresses does not affect the alleviating effect of mycorrhizae on seedling growth, but instead improves the osmotic regulation ability and ionic balance of the seedlings.

Growth and Antioxidant Responses of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) to Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Inoculation and Seaweed Extract Foliar Application

Farzad Rasouli et al.

Summary: The study found that the co-application of arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) and seaweed extract (SWE) can promote the growth and antioxidant potential of lettuce plants. The co-application resulted in the highest growth parameters and biochemical traits, as well as increased total antioxidant activity, ascorbic acid, total phenolics, and flavonoids content compared to the control.

Cooperation With Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Increases Plant Nutrient Uptake and Improves Defenses Against Insects

Lu Yu et al.

Summary: Plants have evolved defense mechanisms to cope with stresses, and cooperation with microorganisms like arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) enhances their defense capabilities. This study found that AMF can improve plant growth and activate defense responses against insect feeding. The mechanisms involve changes in enzyme activities, release of volatile organic compounds, and alterations in carbon and nitrogen content.

Transcriptome analysis provides insights into the root response of Chinese fir to phosphorus deficiency

Wanting Chen et al.

Summary: This study explored the responses of Chinese fir roots to phosphorus deficiency by growing seedlings under different Pi supply levels. The results showed that the roots of Chinese fir exhibited increased expression of genes related to phosphorus starvation, enhanced organic acid synthesis, and increased activities of related enzymes under Pi deficiency conditions. This provides valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms of adaptation to Pi deficiency and the pathway of organic acid synthesis in Chinese fir roots.

Mycorrhiza-Induced Alterations in Metabolome of Medicago lupulina Leaves during Symbiosis Development

Andrey P. Yurkov et al.

Summary: This study revealed that high-efficiency arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) symbiosis formed with Rhizophagus irregularis leads to more intensive accumulation of phosphates in Medicago lupulina leaves under a low phosphorus level condition. Complex mathematical analyses identified the central importance of carbohydrate and carboxylate-amino acid clusters in metabolic development. Mycorrhization both accelerates the transition between plant developmental stages and delays biochemical maturation, mainly in terms of sugar accumulation compared to non-mycorrhized plants.

Metabolic Alterations in Pisum sativum Roots during Plant Growth and Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Development

Oksana Shtark et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates how inoculation with AMF Rhizophagus irregularis affects pea root metabolism at key stages of plant development, highlighting the interaction between symbiotic partners. The metabolic alterations were dependent on plant development stages and AM fungi development, and the comparison with leaf metabolome profiling did not reveal common signatures of metabolic response to mycorrhization in leaves and roots. New investigations are required to expand knowledge of metabolome plasticity and potentially improve sustainable agriculture practices.
