Oxygen production potential of trees in India

A. Keerthika et al.

Summary: Based on the baseline data from ISFR 2019, this study explores the oxygen production potential of India. It reveals that Indian forests have a significant capacity to produce oxygen, with Shorea robusta (Sal) and Mangifera indica (Mango) being the top-ranking tree species. Fast-growing agroforestry tree species and bamboo also contribute to oxygen production, presenting a great opportunity for establishing oxyparks in India.

Surface soil hydraulic conductivity and macro-pore characteristics as affected by four bamboo species in North-Western Himalaya, India

Sridhar Patra et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effect of four commercially important bamboo species on soil hydraulic properties. Dendrocalamus hamiltonii showed significantly higher hydraulic conductivity and water-conducting macroporosity. Root biomass and soil aggregate mean weight diameter were found to be the major determinants of soil hydraulic conductivity. D. hamiltonii was recommended for improving soil hydro-physical property.

In-situ soil moisture conservation in bamboos for the rehabilitation of degraded lands in the Himalayan foothills

Rajesh Kaushal et al.

Summary: The study suggests that in the Himalayan foothills, the use of semicircular trenches in conjunction with Dendrocalamus hamiltonii species can be an effective strategy for land rehabilitation, as they can increase soil moisture, improve growth parameters, and effectively reduce runoff and soil loss.

Explaining the Effect of Crop-Raiding on Food Security of Subsistence Farmers of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa

Tlou D. Raphela et al.

Summary: A study in a subsistence farming community in South Africa found that larger households, especially those relying heavily on maize as a primary food source, are more prone to food insecurity due to crop-raiding. Both farmers and conservationists identified insects as the most damaging crop raider.

Estimation of economic loss and identifying the factors affecting the crop raiding behaviour of Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) in Nilambur part of the southern Western Ghats, Kerala, India

Riju P. Nair et al.

Summary: The crop damage by Asian elephants causes significant economic losses and leads to severe human-elephant conflicts. Factors such as areca nut cultivation and distance to the Reserve Forest have been identified as key factors affecting crop raiding. Additionally, damage to rubber trees by feeding on the bark has been reported.
