Relationships between alexithymia, interoception, and emotional empathy in autism spectrum disorder

Christiana D. Butera et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationships between interoception, alexithymia, and emotional empathy in youth with autism spectrum disorder. The results suggest that while some individuals with autism spectrum disorder may have difficulties with empathy due to co-occurring alexithymia, emotional empathy is not necessarily impaired in autism spectrum disorder.

A network analysis of interoception, self-awareness, empathy, alexithymia, and autistic traits

Han-Xue Yang et al.

Summary: This study recruited 1360 non-clinical college students and adults to investigate the complex inter-relationship between interoceptive sensibility, empathy, alexithymia, and self-awareness in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The results revealed that alexithymia played a significant role in connecting interoceptive deficits, self-awareness, and empathic impairments in ASD, with comparable network structures in high- and low-autistic subgroups.

Motor performance and daily participation in children with and without probable developmental coordination disorder

Laura Delgado-Lobete et al.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the mediating role of motor performance in the relationship between individual and environmental constraints, delayed learning of activities of daily living (ADL), and daily participation in typically developing children and children with probable developmental coordination disorder (DCD). The results showed that motor performance significantly mediated the effects of individual and environmental constraints, as well as ADL learning, on daily participation in both groups of children.

Of Orchids and Dandelions: Empathy but Not Sensory Processing Sensitivity Is Associated with Tactile Discrimination Abilities

Summary: Many concepts of the human personality are based on assumptions about underlying physiological processes. Recent research suggests that personality traits may be reflected by physiological processes. This study tests the impact of different personality dimensions on tactile performance and finds that empathy is associated with tactile ability.

Motor performance, praxis, and social skills in autism spectrum disorder and developmental coordination disorder

Emily Kilroy et al.

Summary: This study compares the social, praxis, and motor skills of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental coordination disorder (DCD), and typically developing (TD) youth, and investigates the relationship between these skills in each group. The findings suggest that ASD and DCD show similar patterns of social and motor impairments, but differ in praxis impairments, cognitive empathy, and Theory of Mind ability.

Differences in Praxis Errors in Autism Spectrum Disorder Compared to Developmental Coordination Disorder

Gabriel Abrams et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the differences in types of praxis errors made on the Florida Apraxia Battery Modified (FAB-M) between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental coordination disorder (DCD), as well as the potential relationships between praxis errors and social deficits in ASD. The findings showed that the ASD group had more timing sequencing errors in imitation of meaningful gestures and more body-part-for-tool errors during gesture-to-command compared to the other two groups. In the ASD group, increased temporal errors in meaningful imitation were significantly correlated with poorer affect recognition and fewer repetitive behaviors.

Sensory modulation difficulties and assessment in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: A systematic review

Jennifer Keating et al.

Summary: Based on multiple studies, it is easier to report sensory modulation difficulties in children with ADHD using caregiver reports or behavioral measures. Although previous research has focused on auditory and tactile processing difficulties, there is no evidence to suggest that these difficulties are more prevalent than difficulties in other sensory domains. Caregiver reports show differences between children with sensory modulation difficulties and ADHD, and those with ADHD only.

Alexithymia and Sensory Processing Sensitivity: Areas of Overlap and Links to Sensory Processing Styles

Lorna S. Jakobson et al.

Summary: Alexithymia is characterized by difficulties identifying and describing feelings as well as an externally oriented thinking style. This study explored the interrelationships between alexithymia and measures such as sensory processing sensitivity, interoceptive accuracy, emotional appraisal difficulties, and sensory sensitivity. The results suggest that alexithymia is linked to both bottom-up and top-down processes that impact emotion processing and regulation.

Summary: This study aims to investigate how motor impairments in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affect simulation deficits at a neurological level, and identifies unique neural signatures of ASD. The results show hypoactivity in a key simulation region (IFGop) during action observation tasks in the ASD group, suggesting a unique neurobiological basis for aspects of social processing in ASD.

Sensory Processing and Aggressive Behavior in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Frank van den Boogert et al.

Summary: The study found that sensory processing difficulties in adults with ASD are associated with more aggressive behavior, both proactive and reactive aggression, physical and verbal aggression, as well as more anger and hostility. Participants with higher sensory sensitivity scores were at the highest risk of aggressive behavior. Application of detailed diagnostics on sensory processing difficulties in clinical practice may benefit treatment of aggressive behavior in adults with ASD.

Interoception and Empathy Impact Perspective Taking

Lukas Heydrich et al.

Summary: Taking on the perspective of another person is crucial for social cognition, and recent studies have shown that interoceptive signals play a role in this process. Synchronous cardio-visual stimulation between the participant's body and a virtual body during an own-body transformation task can enhance the ability to adopt the virtual body's perspective, especially in individuals with higher empathy scores. This suggests a strong link between empathy, interoception, and social perspective taking.
