Using theNIHToolbox to Assess Cognition in Adolescents and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Marjorie Solomon et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) exhibited poorer performance in inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, episodic memory, and processing speed (components of Fluid Cognition), but not in vocabulary or word reading (components of Crystallized Cognition). Both groups showed a positive association between age and Crystallized and Fluid Cognition, with ASD performing more poorly in Fluid Cognition at all ages. Around 80% of ASD individuals belonged to groups with stronger Crystallized versus Fluid Cognition. Adaptive functioning was poorer in groups with a higher proportion of autistic participants.

Neuropsychological and socio-cognitive deficits in patients with obstructive sleep apnea

Luigi Macchitella et al.

Summary: The study investigated the cognitive and socio-cognitive profiles of severe OSA patients, finding impairments in non-verbal reasoning, theory of mind skills, and mental shifting ability, especially in patients with severe nocturnal hypoxemia. The data suggest that hypoxemia plays a key role in affecting cognitive functioning in OSA patients, particularly executive functions and social cognition.
