Enhanced phosphate removal and potential recovery from wastewater by thermo-chemically calcinated shell adsorbents

Sabolc Pap et al.

Summary: Shell-based adsorbents prepared from mussel and oyster shells through chemical calcination were effective in removing phosphate from water. The adsorbents contained calcite and lime on their surfaces and achieved high phosphate adsorption capacity through inner-sphere complexation and surface microprecipitation mechanisms. Desorption study revealed that the bonded phosphate could be readily available for plant uptake in soil.

Extraction and Characterization of Silicon Dioxide from Volcanic Ash of Mount Sinabung, Indonesia: A Preliminary Study

Moraida Hasanah et al.

Summary: This study conducted the extraction of silicon dioxide (SiO2) from volcanic ash using the co-precipitation method. The results showed that the SiO2 content in volcanic ash increased from 48.5% to 99.1% after extraction. The extracted SiO2 had a cleaner morphology and smaller particle size compared to the volcanic ash sample. Additionally, the extracted SiO2 exhibited an amorphous quartz crystal structure and contained siloxanes and silanols.

Assessment andmanagement of lake eutrophication: A case study in Lake Erhai, China

Song-Shun Lin et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the sources and mechanisms that trigger eutrophication in lakes, and discusses effective tools for evaluating the degree of eutrophication. Using Lake Erhai as a case study, it was found in a mesotrophic state with N and P co-limitation before 2006, and only P limitation since then. Effective measures for maintaining sustainable development in the watershed and a framework for an early warning system utilizing GIS and RS technologies for preventing eutrophication are proposed.

Lead(II) adsorption on microwave-pyrolyzed biochars and hydrochars depends on feedstock type and production temperature

Christopher Nzediegwu et al.

Summary: Lead(II) adsorption using carbon-rich chars, produced at different temperatures from various feedstocks, was studied. The results showed that biochars outperformed hydrochars for lead(II) adsorption, with the highest adsorption for canola straw biochar produced at 500°C. Lead(II) adsorption in biochar was mainly attributed to precipitation as hydrocerussite and lead oxide phosphate, whereas in hydrochar it decreased due to interaction with aromatic carbon.

Guangyin Jia et al.

Summary: In this study, hydrochar supported zero-valent iron was successfully synthesized in a one-step process through hydrothermal carbonization of granatum and ZVI. The composites showed uniform distribution of ZVI on the hydrochar surface, with retained ZVI oxide layer and functional groups. The HC/ZVI composites exhibited a higher surface area and lead adsorption capacity compared to individual hydrochar and ZVI materials, making hydrochar a promising supporting material for ZVI synthesis.
