Validation of an imaging FTIR spectroscopic method for analyzing microplastics ingestion by Finnish lake fish (Perca fluviatilis and Coregonus albula)

Emilia Uurasjarvi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ingestion of microplastics by wild freshwater fish species. Results show that a small percentage of perch and vendace had ingested plastic, with most microplastics found being polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate. The developed method revealed low levels of ingested microplastics on average, suggesting the need for further development for routine monitoring of small microplastics.

Neglected microplastics pollution in global COVID-19: Disposable surgical masks

Maocai Shen et al.

Summary: With the outbreak and spread of COVID-19 globally, disposable surgical masks have become widely used, but irresponsible disposal of masks can lead to significant microplastic pollution. Masks can release a large amount of microplastic fibers, and the addition of organic solvents as well as weathering can increase the release of microplastics.

Synthesis, characterisation and evaluation on the performance of ferrofluid for microplastic removal from synthetic and actual wastewater

Sofiah Hamzah et al.

Summary: This study presents an innovative method for microplastic removal by synthesizing ferrofluid without the addition of stabilizing agents or surfactants, using different types of oils as carriers. The optimized formulation using lubricating oil successfully removed 99% of microplastics from water media. Performance evaluation on actual wastewater showed that 64% of microplastics were removed after treatment, making this method a promising solution for microplastic pollution.
