Limit of monsoonal precipitation in southern Tibet during the Last Glacial Maximum from relative moraine extents

Marie-Luce Chevalier et al.

Summary: Constraining the timing and extent of past glaciations is important to understand glacier responses to climate change. The study in Southern Tibet found that past glaciations were greatly influenced by spatial and temporal variations in precipitation, resulting in different extent of moraine deposits. The research also revealed variations in extent of Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS)-3 moraines in different regions, attributed to spatial differences in precipitation patterns.

Decoupling between upper crustal deformation of southern Tibet and underthrusting of Indian lithosphere

Shiguang Wang et al.

Summary: More accurate normal fault mapping and recently constrained extension rates in southern and central Tibet provide insight into the mechanical processes responsible for extension in the region. The study shows that there may not be mechanical coupling between the rifts in southern Tibet and the underthrusting of the rigid Indian lower lithosphere below, as inferred by P-wave tomography. The distribution of extension in Tibet is primarily attributed to divergent, orthogonal thrusting along the curved Himalayan arc and the presence of scattered normal faults in the western Qiangtang terrane.

A new K-Ar illite dating application to constrain the timing of subduction in West Sarawak, Borneo

Qi Zhao et al.

Summary: Dating the tectonic melange in West Sarawak, Borneo using K-Ar analysis of illite provides constraints on the deformation age and duration of subduction activity. The results suggest that subduction in Sarawak may have continued until approximately 60 Ma, with major uplift events occurring at around 36 Ma. This study also highlights the potential of using tectonic melange to extract information about unknown periods of metamorphic melt generation during subduction.

Southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau stopped expanding in the late Miocene

Xiaoming Shen et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates that the shape of the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau has remained unchanged in the past 10 million years, despite extensive exhumation. The finding has important implications for our understanding of the evolution of Earth's climate and biodiversity in the recent geological past.

Impacts of late Miocene normal faulting on Yarlung Tsangpo River evolution, southeastern Tibet

Tianyi Shen et al.

Summary: The Jiacha Gorge in southeastern Tibet is the second-largest deeply incised gorge of the Yarlung-Tsangpo River, and its formation is influenced by the Woka Rift fault activity. The gorge is identified as a knickzone and exhibits greater incision depth compared to the downstream area. Thermochronological data suggests that rapid cooling in the late Miocene is related to the onset of rift extension, while accelerated cooling in the Pliocene is inferred to be driven by river incision in the gorge.

Along-Strike Variation in the Initiation Timing of the North-Trending Rifts in Southern Tibet as Revealed From the Yadong-Gulu Rift

Shuang Bian et al.

Summary: A key issue in the Cenozoic evolution of the Tibetan plateau is the geodynamic drivers for north-trending rifting in southern Tibet. This study investigates the Yadong-Gulu rift (YGR) to understand the initiation and acceleration of rifts along strike. The findings suggest that the rifts west of the YGR initiated simultaneously and show a northward younging pattern in rift acceleration, which may be governed by low-angle Indian slab underthrusting released by slab tearing.

Progressive development of E-W extension across the Tibetan plateau: A case study of the Thakkhola graben, west-central Nepal

Alex D. Brubacher et al.

Summary: The article discusses the tectonic features and cooling rate changes in the Thakkhola graben in Nepal, suggesting that the deceleration of cooling rate may be related to the development of the Tibetan plateau in the middle Miocene and the progressive partitioning of strain away from the Thakkhola graben into other extensional features.

Timing of slip across the South Tibetan detachment system and Yadong-Gulu graben, Eastern Himalaya

Hanwen Dong et al.

Summary: The Yadong-Gulu graben in southern Tibet shows the relationship between east-west extension and north-south extensional strain in the Himalaya. The study uses thermochronometry to investigate the timing of slip across the South Tibetan detachment system (STDS) and Yadong-Gulu structures. Results reveal two main episodes of rapid cooling and exhumation in the STDS footwall, with the second episode occurring in the late Miocene-Pliocene due to slip along the graben system.

Summary: The study integrates various data sources to reveal the slip distribution within the Yadong-Gulu rift zone, providing important insights into the tectonic evolution of the active fault system. The results highlight the seismic risks and regional deformation associated with the Chongba Yumtso fault, contributing to a better understanding of the active rifts in southern Tibet.

Enhanced Quaternary Exhumation in the Central Three Rivers Region, Southeastern Tibet

Xiaoming Shen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that rapid crustal uplift in the central Three Rivers Region of the Tibetan Plateau during the Quaternary is associated with the high-strain zone of Indian-Eurasian collision. These findings emphasize that continuous plate convergence dominated the uplift and deformation in the southeastern Tibet during the Quaternary period.
