High-resolution genomic surveillance elucidates a multilayered hierarchical transfer of resistance between WWTP- and human/animal-associated bacteria

Summary: By analyzing the genomes of multidrug-resistant isolates from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), it was found that WWTP-associated isolates were genetically distinct from human/animal-associated isolates. Circular plasmids were identified as the main source of resistance and showed potential transfer of ARG-bearing plasmids between WWTPs and human/animal-associated bacteria. The study also highlighted the importance of synergy between plasmids and insertion sequences in mediating the transfer of multidrug resistance (MDR) and potentiating the emergence of MDR-hypervirulent clones.

Inactivation of Bacteria and Residual Antimicrobials in Hospital Wastewater by Ozone Treatment
