Influence of leaf removal on grape, wine and aroma compounds of Vitis vinifera L. cv. Merlot under Mediterranean climate

Fabrizio Cincotta et al.

Summary: Merlot, one of the most commonly cultivated grape varieties in the world, showed positive responses to leaf removal (LR) in terms of plant yield, sugar content, acidity, total polyphenols, anthocyanins, color intensity, and volatile aroma compounds. Wines produced from Merlot vines under a Mediterranean climate with LR displayed higher levels of esters and varietal aromas, indicating an enhanced aroma potential. The vintage also played a significant role in influencing the effects of LR on grapes and wines, particularly in the context of climate change towards global warming and increasing aridity in the Mediterranean region.

Impacts of Pre-bloom Leaf Removal on Wine Grape Production and Quality Parameters: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Joshua VanderWeide et al.

Summary: Early leaf removal plays a significant role in grape production by reducing bunch rot disease, increasing degrees Brix, and ultimately improving grape and wine quality. The success of pre-bloom application is influenced by factors such as cultivar and rootstock, with a lesser impact from climate.

Volatilome and Bioaccessible Phenolics Profiles in Lab-Scale Fermented Bee Pollen

Pasquale Filannino et al.

Summary: The study utilized an integrated metabolomic approach to investigate the impact of starter cultures on the volatilome and bioaccessible phenolics profile of fermented bee-collected pollen. Fermentation increased volatile compounds and altered their proportions, with the profile depending on the type of fermentation. Started-BCP had higher levels of esters and alcohols, while both types of fermented BCP showed increased bioaccessible phenolics compared to unprocessed raw BCP.
