High CO2 increases lipid and polyunsaturated fatty acid productivity of the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum in a two-stage model

Min Wu et al.

Summary: The two-stage model with high CO2 induction is an effective approach for the production of biodiesel and PUFA from Skeletonema costatum, suitable for both biofuel and health care markets. High CO2 levels enhance the synthesis of PUFA and increase lipid productivity, although 5% CO2 level is more beneficial compared to 10% CO2 level.

Physiological Response of an Oil-Producing Microalgal Strain to Salinity and Light Stress

Zhihao Ju et al.

Summary: An oil-producing diatom strain, identified as Cyclotella menegheniana, was obtained through the separation and extraction of algae from water samples. The study showed that the strain had high morphological similarity to the genus Cyclotella. Optimal growth conditions for C. menegheniana were determined to be a salinity of 15 g center dot L-1, resulting in the highest biomass of 0.27 g center dot L-1 and oil content of 21%. The study's findings provide a foundation for large-scale production of edible oils and biodiesel.

Influence of seawater acidification on biochemical composition and oxidative status of green algae Ulva compressa

A. Vinuganesh et al.

Summary: The study found that seawater acidification benefits the productivity of Ulva compressa by increasing photosynthetic pigments and primary metabolites levels. Acidified conditions also enhance mineral and polyunsaturated fatty acid content, while reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, indicating a decrease in oxidative stress. However, total antioxidant capacity and various antioxidants were reduced in thalli grown under acidified conditions.

Physiological and Biochemical Responses of Bicarbonate Supplementation on Biomass and Lipid Content of Green Algae Scenedesmus sp. BHU1 Isolated From Wastewater for Renewable Biofuel Feedstock

Rahul Prasad Singh et al.

Summary: In this study, different microalgae were isolated and evaluated for growth and lipid accumulation. The microalgal strains were selected based on their uptake rate of sodium bicarbonate and growth behavior. The Scenedesmus sp. BHU1 strain showed high efficacy in growth and biomass productivity at a sodium bicarbonate concentration of 12mM. This study demonstrates the potential of sodium bicarbonate supplementation in renewable biofuel feedstock using the Scenedesmus sp. BHU1 strain.

Effects of enhanced UV-B radiation on photosynthetic performance and non-photochemical quenching process of intertidal red macroalgae Neoporphyra haitanensis

Song Xue et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of enhanced UV-B radiation on the photosynthetic performance and photoprotective mechanisms of Neoporphyra haitanensis, a red macroalgae. It was found that UV-B radiation inhibited growth, damaged chloroplast structures, and reduced photosynthetic activity in N. haitanensis. Additionally, UV-B radiation increased non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), indicating the activation of effective photoprotection strategies in N. haitanensis. The study also revealed the absence of the xanthophyll cycle, but the accumulation of zeaxanthin under UV-B radiation. These findings are important for understanding the adaptive strategies of intertidal macroalgae to cope with increasing UV-B radiation.

Characteristics of lipid biosynthesis in Chlorella pyrenoidosa as subjected to nutrient deficiency stress

Guo Xie et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that lipid biosynthesis in Chlorella pyrenoidosa was enhanced under nutrient-deficiency stress conditions, resulting in a significant increase in intracellular lipid content. The expression levels of genes related to energy metabolism were downregulated, while those related to lipid synthesis were upregulated, indicating a potential involvement of the ROS signal pathway in mediating metabolic pathways during nutrient-deficiency stress.
