Dynamical Controls of the Eastward Transport of Overwintering Calanus finmarchicus From the Lofoten Basin to the Continental Slope

Huizi Dong et al.

Summary: It has been found that diapausing populations of C. finmarchicus are transported eastward between the Lofoten Basin and continental slope through the Arctic Intermediate Water. The horizontal distribution of C. finmarchicus is controlled by physical factors, and the study highlights the importance of physical-biological interactions in the Norwegian Sea.

Eddy-Induced Near-Surface Chlorophyll Anomalies in the Subtropical Gyres: Biomass or Physiology?

Qingyou He et al.

Summary: Recent satellite observations show higher near-surface phytoplankton chlorophyll concentration in anticyclonic eddies (AEs) than in cyclonic eddies (CEs) in the subtropical gyres, contrary to prevailing features in midlatitude oceans. This finding suggests that the difference in chlorophyll levels is mainly due to physiological adjustments rather than changes in phytoplankton biomass, prompting a reassessment of the effects of eddies on oceanic productivity and carbon cycling in subtropical gyres.

Transport Barriers and the Retention of Calanus finmarchicus on the Lofoten Shelf in Early Spring

Huizi Dong et al.

Summary: The study identified a transport barrier near the Norwegian islands that restricts the exchange of C. finmarchicus populations between shelf and oceanic waters. As mesoscale eddies increase in the mid- to late April, the transport barrier is broken down, leading to off-shelf transport of C. finmarchicus.
