Performance metrics for marine mammal signal detection and classification

John A. Hildebrand et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the performance evaluation metrics for automatic algorithms used in sound detection and classification, and their application in specific algorithms. The issue of detection class imbalance in long-term passive acoustic monitoring datasets affects the performance evaluation of ROC and DET curves, while PR curves have advantages in this aspect. Cost curves provide insights into evaluating the effective operating range of the detector based on the prior probability of occurrence.

Computational bioacoustics with deep learning: a review and roadmap

Dan Stowell

Summary: Animal vocalisations and natural soundscapes provide valuable evidence for studying animal behaviors, populations, and ecosystems. Computational bioacoustics, especially deep learning, has made significant progress recently, benefiting from affordable digital sound recording devices and advancements in informatics. However, there are still unresolved problems in this field, and tasks that have not been fully explored. This paper reviews the latest developments in deep learning for computational bioacoustics and offers a subjective but principled roadmap for future research.

The soundscape of the Anthropocene ocean

Carlos M. Duarte et al.

Summary: Oceans have become noisier due to human activities since the Industrial Revolution, affecting both biological and abiotic sounds. Climate change also plays a role in altering natural sounds in the oceans. The increased noise levels in the ocean pose threats to marine animals' behavior, physiology, and survival, prompting the need for management actions to mitigate the impact.

Workflow and convolutional neural network for automated identification of animal sounds

Zachary J. Ruff et al.

Summary: The use of passive acoustic monitoring in wildlife ecology has increased, with researchers successfully applying deep learning techniques to automate the detection of forest-adapted birds and mammals. By integrating a deep convolutional neural network into a multi-step workflow, researchers can efficiently process large volumes of audio data, significantly reducing human effort. Additionally, a graphical interface for the neural network has been developed to provide field biologists and managers with a portable and user-friendly tool for processing audio data and detecting target species in real-time.

Advancing the Interpretation of Shallow Water Marine Soundscapes

Megan F. McKenna et al.

Summary: Soundscapes provide rich descriptions of composite acoustic environments, but characterizing marine soundscapes simply through sound levels is incomplete. Sources contributing to sound levels shift with changes in biological patterns, physical forces, and human activity, sometimes influencing each other. Integrated methods are needed to interpret soundscapes effectively in marine resource management.

Automatic detection and classification of baleen whale social calls using convolutional neural networksa)

Jeppe Have Rasmussen et al.

Summary: Passive acoustic monitoring is crucial for baleen whale research, but manual detection of whale calls in large data sets is labor-intensive. Automated detectors have been developed for many whale species, but detecting calls with high variability, such as fin whale 40 Hz calls and blue whale D calls, remains a challenge. By using a modular approach with convolutional neural networks, researchers have created automated detectors for these challenging call types with precision and recall rates ranging from 54% to 64%.
