Impact of Lhcx2 on Acclimation to Low Iron Conditions in the Diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Jochen M. Buck et al.

Summary: Iron is a crucial factor in the growth and photoprotection mechanism of diatoms. We found that iron limitation leads to upregulation of Lhcx2 and enhances qE effect. In addition to changes in Lhcx2, iron limitation also causes other adaptive changes in diatoms.

Diatoms contributing to new production in surface waters of the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas during summer with reference to water column stratification

Koji Suzuki et al.

Summary: Intensive phytoplankton blooms, primarily consisting of diatoms, occur in the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas from spring to summer. Using isotope tracer techniques and electron microscopy, this study assessed the diatoms contributing to new production in surface waters, finding that Chaetoceros diatoms dominated the surface assemblages in these areas.

Impact of Sea-Ice Dynamics on the Spatial Distribution of Diatom Resting Stages in Sediments of the Pacific Arctic Region

Yuri Fukai et al.

Summary: The Pacific Arctic region is characterized by seasonal sea-ice, with diatoms being the dominant phytoplankton group during spring and summer. The study found that sea-ice dynamics are an important determinant of diatom species composition and distribution, with open-water species being abundant in areas where sea-ice retreats earlier, and sea-ice diatom species being more prevalent in areas with higher light levels under the sea-ice.
