Modelling plant morphometric parameters as predictors for successful cultivation of some medicinal Agastache species

Rodica Varban et al.

Summary: This study compared and evaluated the suitability of four valuable Agastache species and one cultivar in Romania. The results showed that these species acclimatized successfully and agronomic parameters increased in values in the second year. Stable positive correlations between inflorescence length with plant height and shoot number were observed, and differences among species became more prominent as plants became established.

Effect of Harvesting Time Variations on Essential Oil Yield and Composition of Sage (Salvia officinalis)

Saeid Hazrati et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the production, contents, and essential oil (EO) components of sage as a function of the diurnal variation. The results showed that harvesting between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. revealed the highest EO percentage, while harvesting between 04:00 and 06:00 a.m. indicated the minimum EO percentage. The study also identified the major EO compounds and their variations based on different harvesting times.

Lamiaceae in Mexican Species, a Great but Scarcely Explored Source of Secondary Metabolites with Potential Pharmacological Effects in Pain Relief

Alberto Hernandez-Leon et al.

Summary: The study explores the potential of Mexican genera of Lamiaceae as a source of secondary metabolites responsible for analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Bioactive constituents mainly include terpenes and phenolic compounds, with scarce information reported on the biological activities of certain subgenera. Further preclinical and clinical studies are needed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of these natural products for pain relief and inflammation. Due to the high endemism of Lamiaceae species in Mexico, conservation efforts and investigation of their health benefits are crucial.

Phenological Assessment for Agronomic Suitability of Some Agastache Species Based on Standardized BBCH Scale

Rodica Varban et al.

Summary: The study aimed to establish a standardized phenology scale for Agastache species and assess their cultivation suitability based on local conditions, revealing an increase in vegetation period duration from the first year to the second year. Flowering phase was predominant in both years, but was shortened in the second year due to abundant precipitations. Duration of phenophases was highly influenced by growing degree days.

Enhanced Biological Activity of a Novel Preparation of Lavandula angustifolia Essential Oil

Malgorzata Miastkowska et al.

Summary: The study compared the composition and proregenerative properties of commercially available French narrow-leaved lavender oil and locally cultivated Polish narrow-leaved lavender oil, finding that the self-manufactured oil had lower linalool content and higher lavandulyl acetate content. The lavender oils showed a concentration-dependent effect on IL-6, IL-8, and VEGF production by keratinocyte cell line, with the in-house preparation performing significantly better in increasing VEGF production in vitro cell models.

Hamdoon A. Mohammed et al.

Summary: Salvia officinalis L., commonly known as sage, is used as a culinary herb and traditional medicinal agent globally. Extended drying of sage affects the yield, composition, and biological activities of its essential oils, with differences observed in monoterpene and sesquiterpene constituents. Sage essential oils show significant hepatoprotective and anti-cancer activities, with improved effects observed after drying for medicinal purposes.

Anti-inflammatory effect of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) essential oil prepared during different plant phenophases on THP-1 macrophages

Edina Pandur et al.

Summary: The study revealed that lavender essential oil extracted at the beginning of flowering period showed significant anti-inflammatory effects, inhibiting the synthesis of four pro-inflammatory cytokines in THP-1 cells. Therefore, the collection time of lavender flowers influences the anti-inflammatory effects of the essential oil.
