Anti-obesity effects of galacto-oligosaccharides in obese rats

Shang Kong et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) can inhibit obesity by accelerating browning of white fat cells and thermogenesis of brown fat cells, and improve host lipid homeostasis by promoting cholesterol catabolism.

GOS Ameliorates Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Induced by High Fat and High Sugar Diet through Lipid Metabolism and Intestinal Microbes

Shuting Qiu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the therapeutic effect of galactose oligosaccharide (GOS) on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) through in vivo and in vitro experiments and explored the mechanism by which GOS improves liver lipid metabolism and inflammation through liver and intestinal microbiological analysis. The results showed that GOS can promote body thermogenesis, regulate lipolysis, and accelerate glycine and cholesterol metabolism. GOS also reduced the contents of total cholesterol and triglyceride in cells, reduced the accumulation of lipid droplets, and altered the composition of the intestinal microbiota. These findings provide a basis for the use of GOS as a health food with anti-NAFLD functions.

Safety of a change in the conditions of use of galacto-oligosaccharides as a novel food ingredient in food supplements pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283

Dominique Turck et al.

Summary: The EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens was requested to assess the change in conditions of use of galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) as a novel food. The proposed change increases the maximum level of GOS in food supplements, but based on the information provided, the Panel concluded that it is safe under the proposed conditions of use.

Microbial Regulation of Host Physiology by Short-chain Fatty Acids

Bart van der Hee et al.

Summary: The ancestral diet had more fiber, while modern society's diet lacks it. SCFAs produced by gut bacteria fermenting fiber play a crucial role in intestinal homeostasis and the pathophysiology of human diseases. SCFAs can also impact tissues and organs beyond the gut through blood circulation, inducing epigenetic changes in the genome.

Preventive and Prebiotic Effect of α-Galacto-Oligosaccharide against Dextran Sodium Sulfate-Induced Colitis and Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis in Mice

Ningning He et al.

Summary: Enzymatic-synthesized alpha-GOS shows better preventive efficacy in dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis mice, improving colonic epithelial barrier integrity and alleviating inflammation. Moreover, it inhibits inflammation pathways and reshapes gut microbiota, indicating its potential as a therapeutic agent in UC prevention and adjuvant treatment.

Summary: ALD is a liver disease caused by alcohol consumption, and therapy depends on the spectrum of liver injury but currently there is no universally accepted treatment available. Abstinence from alcohol, restoring gut functions, and nutrient-based treatments are important aspects of therapy.
