Prevalence of the JP2 genotype of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in the world population: a systematic review

Nabil Khzam et al.

Summary: This study investigated the global prevalence of the JP2 genotype of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa). The results showed a relatively high presence of the JP2 genotype in subjects from South America, North America, and Africa. However, there were no studies estimating the presence of the JP2 genotype in the Oceania region. Due to the heterogeneity and quality of the included publications, caution should be exercised when interpreting the data, and there is a need for additional evidence.

The Highly Leukotoxic JP2 Genotype of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans Is Present in the Population of the West African Island, Sal in Cape Verde: A Pilot Study

Johannes J. De Soet et al.

Summary: In a randomly selected group of inhabitants in Sal, Cape Verde, a minority carry the A. actinomycetemcomitans JP2 genotype, which is not strongly associated with severe periodontitis. Further research is warranted to explore this finding.

Genomic Islands Shape the Genetic Background of Both JP2 and Non-JP2 Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans

Weerayuth Kittichotirat et al.

Summary: A study on Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans found variations in gene content among different isolates and different virulence potentials. Some genomic islands were found across all genetic clades, while others were specific to certain clades or subsets. The acquisition of genomic islands plays a significant role in the genetic divergence of A. actinomycetemcomitans, with different mechanisms observed in different strains.

Clinical laboratory diagnostics in dentistry: Application of microbiological methods

Rolf Claesson et al.

Summary: Diagnosis and treatment in dentistry rely on clinical examination, but microbiological analysis can provide supportive evidence to aid decision-making. Clinical microbiology can improve treatment outcomes for conditions such as periodontitis, endodontic infections, and odontogenic abscesses.

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Aggregatibacter aphrophilus in a Kenyan Maasai Adolescent Population and Inhibition of Leukotoxic Activity by Herbal Plants Used as Part of Oral Hygiene Procedures

Mark Lindholm et al.

Summary: The study investigated the prevalence of Aa and A. aphrophilus in Maasai adolescents in Kenya, as well as the effect of herbal plants on leukotoxicity. Results showed a high prevalence of Aa, with a low frequency of the JP2 genotype, and a widespread presence of A. aphrophilus among the sampled individuals. Additionally, the commonly used herbal plant Warburgia ugandensis was effective in inhibiting Aa leukotoxicity.

Etiology of aggressive periodontitis in individuals of African descent

Akihiro Yoshida et al.

Summary: Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) is a form of periodontitis that primarily affects adolescents and has a higher prevalence in individuals of African descent. It shows familial aggregation and genetic predisposition. Specific bacterial strains, like A. actinomycetemcomitans, and increased prevalence of Atopobium and Prevotella genera are associated with AgP. Additionally, IL-1a and IL-1b genetic polymorphisms, as well as elevated levels of IL-17, may play a role in the severity of AgP.
