Polycentric structure and carbon dioxide emissions: Empirical analysis from provincial data in China

Xu Chen et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of polycentric urban structure on carbon dioxide emissions in China, finding a U-shaped relationship between polycentric structure and carbon dioxide emissions, as well as a substitution relationship between polycentric structure and market integration. Additionally, urban distance and transportation infrastructure within provinces have significant nonlinear moderating effects on this relationship.

Energy consumption and CO2 emissions in hinterland container transport

Xuezong Tao et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new analytical framework for estimating energy consumption and CO2 emissions in hinterland transport, using the Yiwu-Ningbo corridor as an empirical case. It reveals that all-road transport consumes the majority of energy and emits the highest CO2, while road-rail combined transport shows lower energy consumption and CO2 emissions, suggesting it as an effective measure for energy saving and CO2 reduction.

Effective use of hydrogen sulfide and natural gas resources available in the Black Sea for hydrogen economy

Merve Ozturk et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel system for utilizing hydrogen sulfide and natural gas resources in the Black Sea for transitioning to a hydrogen economy, with offshore wind and offshore photovoltaic power plants providing electricity for an electrolyzer. The system blends hydrogen with natural gas for industrial and residential applications, resulting in increased combustion efficiencies and reduced carbon dioxide emissions.

Assessing the economic and environmental impact of freight transport sectors in Thailand using computable general equilibrium model

Tanawat Boonpanya et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impacts on socio-economic status and GHG emissions in Thailand when introducing new greenhouse gas mitigation options in freight transportation sectors. Results show that introducing mitigation options in freight transport sectors helps to lower GDP and consumption losses under GHG emissions limitation, while increasing production activities in low carbon energy intensive sectors to compensate for the reduction of energy intensive production in Thailand's economy.

Exergoenvironmental damages assessment of horticultural crops using ReCiPe2016 and cumulative exergy demand frameworks

Fatemeh Mostashari-Rad et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the environmental impacts of horticultural crops under different cropping systems in Guilan province of Iran using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method and CExD analysis. The findings showed that hazelnut production has the highest emissions and energy consumption among all studied crops, while citrus production has the lowest environmental impacts. It is suggested to cultivate citrus for more sustainable horticultural production.

Land transport development in three integrated scenarios for Germany-Technology options, energy demand and emissions

Simone Ehrenberger et al.

Summary: This comprehensive study on land transport in Germany examines the development of drive-trains, electricity and fuel consumption, as well as CO2 and air pollutant emissions. It suggests that only a consistent transition to electrified mobility and regulated emissions from the energy system can significantly reduce transport-related CO2 emissions. However, it is unlikely that Germany will meet its emission reduction target for the transport sector in 2030. Integrated scenario analysis reveals that decarbonization of both transport and electricity systems is essential for a significant reduction in emissions.

Multi-objective optimization of energy use and environmental emissions for walnut production using imperialist competitive algorithm

Majid Khanali et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the energy flow and environmental emissions of walnut orchards in Alborz province of Iran, aiming to optimize them through a multi-objective imperialist competitive algorithm. Results show energy inefficiency in walnut production, with gasoline being the dominant energy consumer. Environmental findings indicate on-orchard emissions and gasoline as the main hotspots.

Modeling the impact of EVs in the Chinese power system: Pathways for implementing emissions reduction commitments in the power and transportation sectors

Bo Li et al.

Summary: The deployment of renewable electricity and electric vehicles offers a unique opportunity to accelerate decarbonization in both China's power and transportation sectors. By utilizing the SWITCH-China model, the impacts of EVs on the power sector were evaluated, showing that large-scale EV deployment increases the need for generation capacity, with smart charging strategies reducing the additional storage capacity required. The study demonstrates that smart charging strategies can save costs compared to unmanaged charging and can help China meet its ambitious carbon targets.

Ambient marine shipping emissions determined by vessel operation mode along the East China Sea

Yangzhou Wu et al.

Summary: This study characterized the ambient pollutants predominant from a variety of marine vessel types by analyzing detailed mass spectra of organic aerosol. Two primary shipping emissions were identified, linked with vessel speed, NOx (and less oxidized OA, BC) and CO (and more oxidized OA), respectively. The approach based on vessel operation mode provided new insights for studying shipping emissions.
