Recurrent neural networks for water quality assessment in complex coastal lagoon environments: A case study on the Venice Lagoon

Summary: Eutrophication is an important issue in coastal lagoons, and this study presents a recurrent cell and network model to analyze eutrophication processes in the Venice lagoon. Experimental results showed that the recurrent models outperformed Random Forests and performed similarly to CNNs in different datasets. The transferability of the trained models was also investigated, with lower computational complexity models providing the highest prediction accuracy for eutrophication. The designed models serve as effective tools for early-warning eutrophication prediction and support the implementation of relevant EU policies.
