Thermodynamic investigation of quasi-isothermal air compression/expansion for energy storage

Ghady Dib et al.

Summary: Compressed air energy storage system is a promising solution with high reliability, low environmental impact and remarkable energy density. This study focuses on two advanced technologies developed by LightSail Energy and Enairys Powertech, presenting a numerical model based on thermodynamic and energy analysis to understand the main operations and physical parameters of these technologies. The mechanical piston with water injection technology produces hot and cold water during air compression and expansion, while the liquid piston with integrated heat exchanger ensures strong isothermal compression and expansion with minimal temperature gradients.
