Compact NMR Spectroscopy for Low-Cost Identification and Quantification of PVC Plasticizers

Summary: A new method using low-field NMR spectroscopy and a non-deuterated solvent is introduced to identify and quantify plasticizers in PVC products, offering a low-cost, fast, and simple way to detect plasticizer concentrations below 2 mg mL(-1) in just 1 min. The reliability of the method is validated by comparison with results obtained using deuterated solvents. Additionally, the type and content of plasticizer in plasticized PVC samples can be determined through an extraction procedure, with possible ways to further decrease the quantification limit discussed.
