The Sporadic cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania infantum in Morocco: A presumably trend towards endemicity

Sara El Mazini et al.

Summary: In Morocco, cutaneous leishmaniasis is a major public health problem caused by three different species. The disease has shown a wide extension throughout the country, accompanied by the spread and abundance of the vectors. Climate, vegetation, and human activities play important roles in the geographical expansion of the disease.

The role of sampling by cotton swab in the molecular diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis

Othmane Daoui et al.

Summary: A non-invasive sampling method (swab) was evaluated for cutaneous leishmaniasis diagnosis, showing lower sensitivity in molecular detection of the nuclear marker ITS1 on swab materials compared to microscopic examination. Additionally, results from ITS1-PCR on stained smears reached higher positivity than on cotton swabs, while KDNA marker results showed no significant difference between swab and stained smear samples.

Genetic diversity of Leishmania tropica: Unexpectedly complex distribution pattern

Arzuv Charyyeva et al.

Summary: This study characterized clinical samples from Syrian and Turkish patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis using ITS1 sequences, and found that Leishmania tropica exhibits a complex phylogeographic pattern. Some haplotypes are widespread across endemic countries while others are restricted to specific regions.

Multilocus sequence analysis provides new insight into population structure and genetic diversity of Leishmania tropica in Morocco

Sofia El Kacem et al.

Summary: Cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania tropica in Morocco shows high genetic differentiation between populations, with no shared haplotypes between two studied localities. Imintanoute strains exhibit higher polymorphisms compared to Foum Jamaa strains despite smaller sample size. These results provide valuable insights into the epidemiology of CL in Imintanoute and raise questions about the involvement of animals in L. tropica transmission cycle.
