Molecular detection and genetic identification of Wolbachia endosymbiont in Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks of Taiwan

Li-Lian Chao et al.

Summary: The genetic identity of Wolbachia endosymbiont in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks was determined for the first time in Taiwan. Wolbachia infection was detected in nymphs, females, and males with different infection rates. Phylogenetic analysis revealed high genetic similarity within supergroups A and B, suggesting possible mechanisms of transstadial transmission in Rh. sanguineus ticks.

Tick-borne pathogens, including Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus, at livestock markets and slaughterhouses in western Kenya

Tatenda Chiuya et al.

Summary: The distributional ranges of emerging infectious diseases have expanded in recent decades due to increased global travel, trade connectivity, and climate change. Transboundary range shifts due to human and livestock movement across borders are a concern for disease control. The presence of pathogens of public health and veterinary importance in ticks from livestock in western Kenya highlights the risk of under-diagnosed zoonotic diseases, calling for continuous surveillance and preventative measures.

Systematic Review of Wolbachia Symbiont Detection in Mosquitoes: An Entangled Topic about Methodological Power and True Symbiosis

Luisa Maria Inacio da Silva et al.

Summary: Wolbachia is a symbiotic bacterium that infects several arthropods and nematodes. Although it has shown success in controlling pathogens in mosquito populations, its abundance and distribution in most mosquito species remain poorly understood. Multiple detection methods and consideration of population dynamics are necessary to accurately assess Wolbachia infection status in host species.

Stable high-density and maternally inherited Wolbachia infections in Anopheles moucheti and Anopheles demeilloni mosquitoes

Thomas Walker et al.

Summary: Wolbachia infections with high-density have been found in geographically diverse populations of Anopheles species, indicating potential for reducing malaria transmission. These strains possess homologs of cytoplasmic incompatibility factor (cif) genes, suggesting they have the capacity to spread through host populations. Further investigation should be conducted to explore their potential as candidates for Wolbachia biocontrol strategies targeting Anopheles mosquitoes.

Wolbachia Detection in Field-Collected Mosquitoes from Cameroon

Roland Bamou et al.

Summary: Wolbachia bacteria, which can change host biology and suppress vector population, were found in 8 out of 22 mosquito species collected in Cameroon. Main vectors of diseases like dengue and malaria were not infected, while other species like C. moucheti showed relatively high infection rates. Further characterization of the Wolbachia strains is warranted.

Summary: The study evaluated the ability of MALDI-TOF MS to identify different tick species in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, demonstrating a high level of reproducibility and specificity in tick identification. The results confirmed the precision and reliability of MALDI-TOF MS for tick identification through comparison with morphological and molecular approaches.
