Influenza virus replication in cardiomyocytes drives heart dysfunction and fibrosis

Adam D. Kenney et al.

Summary: Cardiac dysfunction is a common complication of severe influenza virus infection, and it is unclear whether this occurs through direct infection of cardiac tissue or indirectly through systemic lung inflammation. In this study, a novel recombinant heart-attenuated influenza virus was generated, and it was found that robust virus replication in the heart is required for pathology, even when lung inflammation is severe.

Human influenza A virus causes myocardial and cardiac-specific conduction system infections associated with early inflammation and premature death

David Filgueiras-Rama et al.

Summary: The study found that human influenza A virus can infect the mouse heart and cardiac-specific conduction system, with highly pathogenic viruses causing faster replication, higher levels of inflammatory cytokines, and higher viral titres in the heart, leading to cardiac conduction abnormalities and high mortality rates.

Acute cardiovascular events triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic-related stress in non-infected individuals. The Jordan COVID-19 Acute Cardiovascular Events (JoCORE) study

Ayman J. Hammoudeh et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant psychosocial and economic stresses which can trigger life-threatening acute cardiovascular events in individuals not infected with the virus. The majority of patients experienced psychosocial triggers, including loneliness, hopelessness, fear of COVID-19 infection, anger, and stress related to death of a significant person. Some patients also reported economic stressors such as financial hardships, job loss or insecurity.

Shedding the Light on the Natural History of Intracranial Aneurysms: An Updated Overview

Alice Giotta Lucifero et al.

Summary: The molecular pathways underlying the multifactorial natural history of intracranial aneurysms are largely unknown, with factors like wall shear stress, endothelial oxidative stress, and inflammation playing important roles. Other factors such as patient demographics and lifestyle also contribute to aneurysm growth and rupture. Improvements in aneurysm wall imaging techniques and targeted therapies against the inflammatory cascade may significantly alter the natural history of IAs.
