A genomic analysis of osmotolerance in Staphylococcus aureus

Dylan Casey et al.

Summary: The Gram-positive bacterial pathogen Staphylococcus aureus possesses key phenotypic characteristic of growth in low aw environments. A homology transfer approach was used to identify putative osmotolerance loci in Staphylococcus aureus ST772-MRSA-V based on osmotic stress response systems of Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. The genome of ST772-MRSA-V shows degeneracy in osmotic stress response with multiple copies of key genes like opuD, nhaK, mrp/mnh, and opp, suggesting regulation at multiple levels.

Prokaryotic Solute/Sodium Symporters: Versatile Functions and Mechanisms of a Transporter Family †

Tania Henriquez et al.

Summary: The solute/sodium symporter family consists of integral membrane proteins that use a sodium gradient for uphill transport. Members of this family are found in all three kingdoms of life, with some playing key roles in diseases and bacterial-host interactions.
