Composition identification and functional verification of bacterial community in disease-suppressive soils by machine learning

Zhenyan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study identified the general patterns of bacterial-community composition in disease-suppressive soils using metadata analysis and machine learning. It discovered potential beneficial bacteria and confirmed their disease-suppressive ability. The research also revealed that the use of pesticides decreases the disease-suppressive ability of soil.

Improved degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons by co-culture of fungi and biosurfactant-producing bacteria

Edidiong Okokon Atakpa et al.

Summary: In this study, the combined effect of a fungal strain and biosurfactant-producing bacteria on crude-oil degradation was investigated. The results showed that the co-culture of these two microorganisms effectively reduced the surface tension and increased the degradation rate of petroleum hydrocarbons. Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry analysis and RT-qPCR experiments revealed the mechanism behind this synergistic behavior.

Investigating the simultaneous removal of hydrocarbons and heavy metals by highly adapted Bacillus and Pseudomonas strains

Zulfa Al Disi et al.

Summary: The status, content, and availability of heavy metals and hydrocarbons are significantly influenced by weathering processes. Highly adapted strains of Bacillus and Pseudomonas have been found capable of removing heavy metals and hydrocarbons from weathered oil components. The distribution of heavy metals in weathered soil is not affected by soil organics, which is important for the remediation process. The efficiency of heavy metals removal is related to the heavy metal status rather than the adapted bacteria.

Treatment of Pesticide-Contaminated Water Using a Selected Fungal Consortium: Study in a Batch and Packed-Bed Bioreactor

Marcela Levio-Raiman et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the efficient removal of a pesticide mixture from wastewater using fungal strains, with the highest removal efficiency achieved using an inoculum concentration of 30% wv(-1). The immobilization of the fungal consortium in alginate bead was effective in continuous treatment, requiring approximately 10 days to achieve removal efficiency in the packed-bed reactor operated at different flow rates. The reactor was sensitive to flow rate fluctuations but able to maintain removal efficiency until the end of the study.

A Pesticide Biopurification System: A Source of Biosurfactant-Producing Bacteria with Environmental Biotechnology Applications

Claudio Lamilla et al.

Summary: Biosurfactants, produced by microorganisms, are less toxic and more biodegradable compared to synthetic surfactants. Bacteria tolerant to pesticides in biopurification systems can efficiently produce biosurfactants, which can enhance pesticide degradation. Further studies on biosurfactants from biopurification systems could have important environmental biotechnology applications.
