TmIKKε Is Required to Confer Protection Against Gram-Negative Bacteria, E. coli by the Regulation of Antimicrobial Peptide Production in the Tenebrio molitor Fat Body

Hye Jin Ko et al.

Summary: In this study, a homolog of IKK epsilon (TmIKK epsilon) was identified and characterized for its role in regulating immune signaling pathways in insects. The expression of TmIKK epsilon was induced by microbial challenge and its knockdown reduced the survival of insects against microbial infections.

The antiviral role of NF-κB-mediated immune responses and their antagonism by viruses in insects

Yin P. Cheung et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the literature on the interactions between the NF-kappa B pathway and viruses in insects, with a focus on the dipterans Drosophila melanogaster and Aedes aegypti. The findings suggest that NF-kappa B-mediated immune responses play a role in antiviral defense in insects, and the cGAS-STING pathway is involved in viral RNA detection and NF-kappa B activation. Additionally, the study highlights the molecular mechanisms by which viruses antagonize NF-kappa B responses. This understanding of insect antiviral immunity is important for various aspects of human life, including disease transmission, biotechnology, and agricultural pests.

Effect of Temperature and Photoperiod on Development, Survival, and Growth Rate of Mealworms, Tenebrio molitor

Stephan Eberle et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of temperature and photoperiod on the survival, development, and growth of mealworms. The results showed that temperature significantly influenced the survival rate, developmental time, and growth rate, while photoperiod had significant effects on the developmental time and growth rate. The highest survival and growth rates, along with the shortest developmental time, were observed at 25 and 30 degrees C under constant darkness.

Summary: Hemocytes, similar to vertebrate blood cells, play important roles in insect development and immunity. New technology, such as single-cell transcriptomic analysis in combination with Drosophila genetics, allows for a better understanding of their functions. This review compares data from different insects and identifies major classes of hemocytes with distinct morphology and functions.

TmSpz-like Plays a Fundamental Role in Response to E. coli but Not S. aureus or C. albican Infection in Tenebrio molitor via Regulation of Antimicrobial Peptide Production

Ho Am Jang et al.

Summary: TmSpz-like, a cystine knot protein in T. molitor, plays a critical role in the innate immune response against E. coli infection by positively regulating AMP production and the expression of NF-κB-encoding genes. Its knockdown leads to downregulation of AMP-encoding genes and NF-κB expression, impacting the viability of infected larvae.

Drosophila as a Model for Infectious Diseases

J. Michael Harnish et al.

Summary: The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is a powerful tool for studying fundamental genetics and biology principles as well as mechanisms underlying human genetic diseases. Due to their highly conserved innate immune systems and cellular processes commonly hijacked by pathogens, fruit flies make effective and applicable models for studying host-pathogen interactions. Fruit fly researchers possess the most powerful tools for genetic manipulation in multicellular organisms, allowing for robust experiments to dissect the molecular functions of virulent factors.

The effect of relative humidity on the survival and growth rate of the yellow mealworm larvae (Tenebrio molitor, Linnaeus 1758)

N. S. Johnsen et al.

Summary: The study found that relative humidity had no significant effect on the survival rate of Tenebrio molitor larvae, but had a significant impact on their individual mass and length, which increased with humidity. It is recommended that industrial producers of T. molitor larvae use a relative humidity close to the optimal level of 84% to achieve larger larvae size, faster growth rate, and higher yield.

Summary: The study found that Tm-DSP1 in the mealworm beetle may act as a DAMP molecule in response to immune challenge, mediating immune responses. Tm-DSP1 is expressed in all developmental stages and larval tissues, with upregulated expression upon immune challenge, and RNA interference treatment leading to reduced immune responses against bacterial infection.
