Detection of Genetic Variability in Borrelia miyamotoi (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae) Between and Within the Eastern and Western United States

Andrias Hojgaard et al.

Summary: Research on Borrelia miyamotoi has revealed significant genetic differences between strains in the eastern and western United States, with distinct sequences identified in each region. Infected ticks in the Northeast predominantly carry one sequence type, while ticks in the North-Central and Mid-Atlantic regions may harbor multiple sequence types simultaneously. Further studies are needed to fully understand the phylogeography and potential biological implications of these differences.

The evolution of hard tick-borne relapsing fever borreliae is correlated with vector species rather than geographical distance

Ranna Nakao et al.

Summary: This study determined the genome sequences of 16 HTRF borreliae strains, showing that chromosomal gene synteny was highly conserved among different geographic regions and tick species. Phylogenetic analysis based on core gene sequences revealed distinguishable HTRF and STRF borreliae, with each forming a monophyletic group in the RF borreliae lineage.
