Antimicrobial blue light: A 'Magic Bullet' for the 21st century and beyond?

Leon G. Leanse et al.

Summary: This review provides an update on the recent studies exploring the antimicrobial effects of antimicrobial blue light (aBL) in the treatment of multidrug-resistant infections. The review focuses on the efficacy of aBL against different microbes, identification of endogenous chromophores and targets of aBL, resistance development to aBL, safety of aBL against host cells, and synergism of aBL with other agents. The review also offers insights into the future of aBL.

Effects of free radicals from doxycycline hyclate and minocycline hydrochloride under blue light irradiation on the deactivation of Staphylococcus aureus, including a methicillin-resistant strain

Jeu-Ming P. Yuann et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in doxycycline hyclate (DCH) and minocycline hydrochloride (MH) under blue light irradiation and their deactivation effects on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). The results showed that DCH is relatively unstable compared to MH, and has a more efficient inactivating effect on S. aureus and MRSA.

Gallium Mesoporphyrin IX-Mediated Photodestruction: A Pharmacological Trojan Horse Strategy To Eliminate Multidrug-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Klaudia Michalska et al.

Summary: The study showed that gallium mesoporphyrin IX (Ga3 + MPIX) has dual functionality in antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation, disrupting iron metabolism and possessing photosensitizer properties. It efficiently destroys bacteria with relatively low toxicity to eukaryotic cells and phototoxicity.

Light modulates important pathogenic determinants and virulence in 2 Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus ESKAPE pathogens

M. R. Tuttobene et al.

Summary: Light can modulate important pathogenicity determinants and virulence in ESKAPE priority pathogens found in warm-blooded hosts, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp., highlighting the potential use of light to control pathogen's virulence. Moreover, the response to light varies among different species, with virulence being enhanced in some species and reduced in others in an epithelial infection model.

Blue Light Protection, Part I-Effects of blue light on the skin

Jahnna G. Coats et al.

Summary: Blue light, emitted between the wavelengths of 400 to 500 nm, can have both harmful and beneficial effects on the skin, depending on intensity and wavelength. While short-term safety information is more readily available, the biological effects of long-term exposure to high-energy blue light are still not fully understood.

Can Gram-Negative Bacteria Develop Resistance to Antimicrobial Blue Light Treatment?

Aleksandra Rapacka-Zdonczyk et al.

Summary: The study aimed to demonstrate the potential tolerance development in Gram-negative bacteria during antimicrobial blue light (aBL) treatment. Results showed that representative Gram-negative bacteria may develop tolerance to aBL, and the observed adaptation was a stable feature. Assays involving deficient mutants revealed possible mechanisms for aBL tolerance development.
