Bioactive Compounds of Citrus Fruits: A Review of Composition and Health Benefits of Carotenoids, Flavonoids, Limonoids, and Terpenes

Ramesh Kumar Saini et al.

Summary: Increasing consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains reduces the risk of metabolic syndrome-related diseases, such as neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. Citrus fruits, rich in carotenoids, flavonoids, terpenes, limonoids, and other bioactive compounds, have been shown to have health benefits in preventing metabolic syndrome. Citrus essential oil, containing limonoids and terpenes, also has antioxidant, antimicrobial, and flavoring properties. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the composition and health benefits of citrus bioactives.

A comprehensive analysis of carotenoids metabolism in two red-fleshed mutants of Navel and Valencia sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis)

Jaime Zacarias-Garcia et al.

Summary: Kirkwood Navel and Ruby Valencia are spontaneous bud mutations of sweet orange that exhibit red pigmentation in the pulp. These mutants accumulate higher levels of carotenoids compared to standard oranges, with an altered carotenoid profile. The mutation affects not only the fruit, but also other carotenogenic tissues of the mutant plants, resulting in a different carotenoid composition. The transcriptional profile of carotenoid metabolism-related genes and lycopene cyclase genes did not explain the observed differences in carotenoid composition.

Flavonoids composition and antioxidant potential assessment of extracts from Gannanzao Navel Orange (Citrus sinensis Osbeck Cv. Gannanzao) peel

Xiaoyan Long et al.

Summary: The study found that the ethyl acetate extract from Gannanzao navel orange peel exhibited the best antioxidant potential among four extracts tested. This extract also contained the highest levels of total polyphenols and total flavonoids, along with specific flavonoids that may contribute to its excellent antioxidant properties.

Antioxidant capacity in fruit of Citrus cultivars with marked differences in pulp coloration: Contribution of carotenoids and vitamin C

Jaime Zacarias-Garcia et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the contribution of carotenoids and vitamin C to the antioxidant capacity of citrus fruit pulp, finding that vitamin C had a significant contribution to hydrophilic antioxidant capacity, while the contribution of carotenoids to lipophilic antioxidant capacity varied widely. Valencia Ruby orange had the highest lipophilic antioxidant capacity due to high concentrations of lycopene and phytoene, followed by Nadorcott mandarin with high beta-cryptoxanthin content.

Accumulation of tocopherols and transcriptional regulation of their biosynthesis during cold storage of mandarin fruit

Florencia Rey et al.

Summary: This study found that the tocopherol content at harvest is directly related to the tolerance of mandarin fruit to postharvest chilling injury, with fruits that are more tolerant to CI accumulating the highest tocopherol content. During cold storage, most genes related to tocopherol precursors were up-regulated, while genes involved in the tocopherol-core pathway were generally repressed.

Regulation of Tocopherol Biosynthesis During Fruit Maturation of Different Citrus Species

Florencia Rey et al.

Summary: Tocopherols, plant-derived isoprenoids with vitamin E activity, play important roles in physiological processes in plants. This study investigated tocopherol synthesis and accumulation in Citrus fruits during maturation, revealing differences between genotypes, tissues, and maturation stages. Lemon had the highest tocopherol content among the species studied. Genes involved in tocopherol synthesis showed tissue-specific and developmentally modulated expression patterns.

Interaction between Flavonoids and Carotenoids on Ameliorating Oxidative Stress and Cellular Uptake in Different Cells

Xuan Chen et al.

Summary: The research found that the combination of flavonoids and carotenoids exhibited stronger antioxidant activity, especially when quercetin was combined with lycopene at a ratio of 1:5. Flavonoids had a modulatory effect on the cellular uptake and antioxidant enzyme activities of carotenoids, indicating a potential synergistic relationship between the two compounds.

Effect of fruit shading and cold storage on tocopherol biosynthesis and its involvement in the susceptibility of Star Ruby grapefruit to chilling injury

Florencia Rey et al.

Summary: The study found that tocopherol contents increased during fruit development, but shading reduced gamma-tocopherol accumulation and total content. Cold storage increased total and alpha-tocopherol contents in fruit, but the relationship between tocopherol accumulation and CI tolerance was not clear. Changes in tocopherol synthesis genes during cold storage seemed to be cold-mediated and not related to CI development.
