Endocrine disruptor chemicals. A review of their effects on male reproduction and antioxidants as a strategy to counter it

Nelson Quilaqueo et al.

Summary: Endocrine disruptor chemicals have adverse effects on male reproductive system and sperm cells, including impacts on sperm motility, viability, and acrosomal reaction. Studies suggest that the increase of endocrine disruptor chemicals in the environment may be correlated with the increase in male reproductive problems, and the use of antioxidants is being explored as a strategy to counteract these harmful effects.

Summary: This study investigated the association between exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol S (BPS) individually or in mixtures and semen quality among Chinese men. The results showed that higher exposure to individual BPA, BPS, and bisphenol mixtures was associated with impaired semen quality.

The Association of Certain Seminal Phthalate Metabolites on Spermatozoa Apoptosis: An Exploratory Mediation Analysis via Sperm Protamine

Feng Xiong et al.

Summary: This study explored the association between exposure to phthalates and spermatozoa apoptosis, and whether sperm protamine mediates this association. The findings suggest that exposure to phthalates is associated with increased levels of protamine, and the protamine ratio may mediate the process of spermatozoa apoptosis.

Exposure to phthalates and female reproductive health: A literature review

Carla Giovana Basso et al.

Summary: Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous compounds known for their ability to interfere with hormone action and affect the development and function of male and female reproductive systems. Among EDCs, phthalate esters have attracted special attention due to their widespread exposure and potential disruption of male androgen-dependent development. Recent research suggests that phthalates may also negatively impact female reproductive health, including ovarian and uterine functions.

Testicular toxicity of bisphenol compounds: Homeostasis disruption of cholesterol/testosterone via PPARα activation

Zhangshan Gao et al.

Summary: The widespread presence of bisphenols (BPs) in the environment and their potential reproductive toxicity have attracted increasing attention. This study evaluated the effects of BPA and its substitutes (BPS, BPF, and BPAF) on the male reproductive system. The results showed that these BPs disrupted germ cell proliferation, induced germ cell apoptosis, and perturbed sperm physiologies and spermatogenesis. The disruption of testosterone biosynthesis in Leydig cells was found to be the underlying mechanism. Furthermore, the depletion of cholesterol in Sertoli cells contributed to the reduced testosterone production. The knockdown of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha alleviated the downregulation of cholesterogenesis-related genes, indicating its critical role in BPs-induced testicular dysfunction.

Influence of Risk Factors for Male Infertility on Sperm Protein Composition

Marie Bisconti et al.

Summary: Male infertility is a common health problem influenced by lifestyle factors like environment, nutrition, smoking, stress, and endocrine disruptors. These factors affect sperm parameters and lead to deregulation of sperm proteins. Analysis shows oxidative stress and immune and inflammatory responses as common mechanisms in sperm alterations related to risk factors.
