Potential use of plant-based by-products and waste to improve the quality of gluten-free foods

Graziana Difonzo et al.

Summary: The food industry generates a significant amount of waste and by-products which negatively impact the environment and economy. Plant-based waste and by-products, rich in bioactive compounds, can be utilized to improve the nutritional value of gluten-free products, which are typically lacking in bioactive compounds. By incorporating plant-based by-products, it is possible to enhance the nutritional profile and overall quality of gluten-free foods, thereby improving the sustainability of the agri-food system.

Phytonutrients of Bitter Apricot Seeds Modulate Human Lipid Profile and LDL Subfractions in Adults with Elevated Cholesterol Levels

Jana Kopcekova et al.

Summary: The present study evaluated the effect of short-term consumption of bitter apricot seeds phytonutrients on cardiovascular risk factors, with a focus on LDL cholesterol subfractions using the Lipoprint system. The results showed that daily consumption of bitter apricot seeds for 42 days significantly decreased total cholesterol (T-C) and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) in the group with elevated total cholesterol levels. The study also found that apricot seed consumption led to a significant increase in the mean size of LDL particles.

Organic Beet Leaves and Stalk Juice Attenuates the Glutathione Peroxidase Increase Induced by High-Fat Meal in Dyslipidemic Patients: A Pilot Double-Blind, Randomized, Controlled Trial

Amanda Cristine de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The study found that organic beet leaves and stalks had better nutritional composition than conventional ones, and the organic beet juice could attenuate the increase in biomarkers of oxidative stress after a high-fat meal. Therefore, the consumption of beet leaves and stalks may contribute to the treatment of conditions associated with dyslipidemia.

Vasoactive Properties of a Cocoa Shell Extract: Mechanism of Action and Effect on Endothelial Dysfunction in Aged Rats

Pilar Rodriguez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the vasodilatory effects of cocoa shell extract and its potential to improve age-induced endothelial dysfunction. The findings suggest that cocoa shell extract has vasodilatory properties associated with increased nitric oxide bioavailability, mainly due to its antioxidant components, particularly protocatechuic acid. Therefore, cocoa shell extract has the potential to be used as a food ingredient for diseases related to endothelial dysfunction.

Current Evidence of Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) Ingestion on Vascular Health: A Food Science and Technology Perspective

Monica Volino-Souza et al.

Summary: L-arginine is crucial for nitric oxide synthesis and supplementation with its precursor L-citrulline, found in watermelon, can improve vascular function. However, there are differing findings on the effect of watermelon supplementation, possibly due to varying L-citrulline doses. Food technology can be applied to concentrate L-citrulline content and reduce volume for convenient ingestion. Watermelon-derived L-citrulline appears to be an effective supplementation for improving vascular health.

Taurisolo®, a Grape Pomace Polyphenol Nutraceutical Reducing the Levels of Serum Biomarkers Associated With Atherosclerosis

Giuseppe Annunziata et al.

Summary: A study showed that a novel nutraceutical formulation based on grape pomace polyphenols, Taurisolo (R), significantly reduced levels of TMAO and oxidative stress-related biomarkers in humans. This indicates Taurisolo (R) as an effective nutraceutical strategy for the prevention of atherosclerosis.

Obesity and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors: From Childhood to Adulthood

Dorota Drozdz et al.

Summary: Obesity is a major epidemic in the 21st century that increases the risk of various cardiometabolic factors. Early recognition of CV damage and prevention strategies are crucial in reducing CV morbidity and mortality. Recognizing and tracking risk factors from prenatal age to adulthood is essential in addressing the impact of obesity on cardiovascular health.

Global epidemiology of dyslipidaemias

Angela Pirillo et al.

Summary: Dyslipidaemias are alterations to the plasma lipid profile associated with clinical conditions, with high cholesterol being the most common form and a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Treating lipid abnormalities may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes.

Food-derived polyphenol compounds and cardiovascular health: A nano-technological perspective

Gustavo Oliveira et al.

Summary: Polyphenols have high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but their bioavailability is limited. Food encapsulation technology can improve the bioavailability of polyphenols, with nanoparticles showing potential in enhancing their effects on cardiovascular health. Further research is needed to determine whether nano-encapsulated polyphenols have a greater impact on cardiovascular health compared to non-encapsulated polyphenols.
