UV-induced dissociation of CH2BrI probed by intense femtosecond XUV pulses

Hansjochen Kockert et al.

Summary: The ultraviolet-induced dissociation and photofragmentation of gas-phase CH2BrI molecules, induced by intense femtosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses at different photon energies, are studied. The charge transfer between highly charged iodine ions and neutral CH2Br radicals produced by C-I bond cleavage is investigated. The rotation of the fragment induced by the bond cleavage is found to have an influence on the charge transfer process.

High harmonic generation in mixed XUV and NIR fields at a free-electron laser

Jan Tross et al.

Summary: We present the results of an experiment investigating the generation of high-order harmonics through XUV-assisted high-order harmonic generation. Our findings demonstrate that the overlap of XUV and NIR pulses enhances the harmonic yield, while the XUV preceding the NIR pulse decreases the HHG yield.

Generation of intense phase-stable femtosecond hard X-ray pulse pairs

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Coherent nonlinear spectroscopies and imaging in the X-ray domain provide direct insight into the coupled motions of electrons and nuclei with resolution on the electronic length scale and timescale. The experimental realization of such techniques will strongly benefit from access to intense, coherent pairs of femtosecond X-ray pulses. We have observed phase-stable X-ray pulse pairs containing more than 3 x 107 photons at 5.9 keV (2.1 angstrom) with similar to 1 fs duration and 2 to 5 fs separation. The highly directional pulse pairs are manifested by interference fringes in the superfluorescent and seeded stimulated manganese K alpha emission induced by an X-ray free-electron laser. The fringes constitute the time-frequency X-ray analog of Young's double-slit interference, allowing for frequency domain X-ray measurements with attosecond time resolution.

Electronic quantum coherence in glycine molecules probed with ultrashort x-ray pulses in real time

David Schwickert et al.

Summary: In this study, x-rays are used to create and probe quantum coherence in the photoionized amino acid glycine. The researchers observe the coherent superposition of quantum mechanical eigenstates and the evolution of electronic coherence through delayed x-ray pulses. The experiment provides direct evidence for long-lived electronic coherence in photoionized biomolecules.

Imaging multiphoton ionization dynamics of CH3I at a high repetition rate XUV free-electron laser

Yu-Chen Cheng et al.

Summary: By experimentally studying the Coulomb explosion dynamics of methyl iodide upon core-hole ionization of iodine and classically simulating the fragmentation, it was found that fast Auger decay significantly contributes to the charging mechanism prior to charge transfer. Additionally, another charging mechanism for weak fragmentation channels leading to triply charged carbon atoms was proposed. This study highlights the usefulness of classical simulations in guiding the quantum mechanical description of femtosecond dynamics in molecular systems.

Two-dimensional correlation analysis for x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

S. Li et al.

Summary: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measures the binding energy of core-level electrons, providing information on the local chemical environment in a molecular system. The technique's resolution is often limited by the bandwidth of the ionising x-ray pulse, problematic for time-resolved XPS. A novel correlation analysis method is presented in this work, exploiting the correlation between x-ray and photoelectron spectra to improve resolution in XPS measurements.

Electron-ion coincidence measurements of molecular dynamics with intense X-ray pulses

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a single-pulse X-ray pump-probe experiment on N2 molecules, utilizing X-ray induced dissociation process as an internal clock read out via coincident detection of photoelectrons and fragment ions. Through ab-initio simulations, researchers are able to map characteristic features in kinetic energy release and photoelectron spectrum to specific delay times between photon absorptions. This work highlights that inner-shell photoelectron energies can be sensitive probes of nuclear dynamics, adding a new dimension to the study of light-matter interactions with X-ray pulses.

Deriving x-ray pulse duration from center-of-energy shifts in THz-streaked ionized electron spectra

Marek Wieland et al.

Summary: A fast and robust method has been developed to characterize x-ray pulse durations using the center of energy (COE) of the photoelectron spectrum. The maximum COE can be derived from two COE measurements set at a phase of pi/2 apart, allowing for real-time measurement of pulse durations ranging from sub-fs to tens of fs with a fairly simple experimental setup. The theory, model, and data presented in the manuscript agree well with each other, providing a reliable way to evaluate x-ray pulse durations.

Multi-channel photodissociation and XUV-induced charge transfer dynamics in strong-field-ionized methyl iodide studied with time-resolved recoil-frame covariance imaging

Summary: This study investigated the photodissociation dynamics of methyl iodide (CH3I) subjected to strong-field ionization using intense XUV radiation from SACLA, in conjunction with a femtosecond IR pulse. By conducting a multi-mass ion VMI experiment and analyzing the correlations between the momenta of different fragment ions through time-resolved recoil-frame covariance imaging, a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics was achieved. The results show promising evidence that these techniques can be applied with high count rates to study ultrafast photochemistry in various molecular systems using advanced light sources.
