Non-ergodic fragmentation of protonated reserpine using femtosecond laser activation

Richard Bredy et al.

Summary: Laser activation experiments were conducted on gas phase protonated reserpine at different wavelengths and laser pulse intensities, revealing evidence of non-statistical fragmentation with 800 nm femtosecond laser activation. Mechanisms of fragmentation induced by Coulomb repulsion after ultrafast ionization of the protonated molecule were discussed. This experimental scheme helps in understanding the physics behind femtosecond laser activation.

On-the-fly investigation of XUV excited large molecular ions using a high harmonic generation light source

Marius Herve et al.

Summary: In this study, experiments using extreme ultraviolet femtosecond light pulses to photoexcite large molecular ions at high internal energy were presented. By combining an electrospray ionization source and a mass spectrometer with a pulsed light source based on high harmonic generation, the interaction between high energy photons and mass selected ions in conditions accessible on large-scale facilities was studied. It was shown that even without an ion trapping device, large systems such as proteins could be studied. Light induced dissociative ionization and proton migration were observed in model systems such as reserpine, insulin, and cytochrome c. These results offer new perspectives for time-resolved experiments with ultrashort pulses in the emerging field of attosecond chemistry.

Controlled ultrafast ππ*-πσ* dynamics in tryptophan-based peptides with tailored micro-environment

Marius Herve et al.

Summary: Researchers combined an electron spray source with ultrafast pump-probe UV-Vis spectroscopy to study pi pi*-pi sigma* coupling in tryptophan-based ions and used mass spectrometry to produce isolated molecular ions with a controlled micro-environment. They measured ultrafast photo-induced pi pi*-pi sigma* dynamics in tryptophan species in the presence of a single, charged adduct, observing a significant increase in timescale when changing the added adduct atom. A model was proposed to rationalize the results based on the effects of the adduct on the electronic structure of the molecule, offering perspectives on controlling ultrafast molecular processes by designing the micro-environment on the Angstrom length scale.

Ultrafast dynamics of correlation bands following XUV molecular photoionization

M. Herve et al.

Summary: The study shows the universal role of correlation bands in ultrafast energy relaxation of size-scalable two-dimensional molecules following ionization by an ultrashort XUV pulse. It observed long lifetimes that nonlinearly increase with the number of valence electrons and proposed a general law based on solid-like electron-phonon scattering. This offers new opportunities in attosecond science and high-energy photophysics.
