Covalently cross-linked hydrogels: Mechanisms of nonlinear viscoelasticity

Milad Kamkar et al.

Summary: Gelatin-based hydrogels are widely used in biomedical applications, but their mechanical behavior under large deformations is not well understood. In this study, a novel technique was used to evaluate the mechanical response of GelMA hydrogels under large deformations, revealing nonlinear viscoelastic behavior. The concentration of the hydrogel precursor was found to affect the viscoelastic parameters.

Summary: The study evaluated the microstructural composition, ion release, cytocompatibility, and mineralization potential of Bio-C Sealer ION+ and EndoSequence BC Sealer HiFlow compared with AH Plus in contact with human periodontal ligament cells. Both Bio-C Sealer ION+ and EndoSequence BC Sealer HiFlow showed better cytocompatibility and higher mineralization potential compared to AH Plus. The sealers also exhibited upregulated expression of osteo/cementogenic genes.

Role of temperature on bio-printability of gelatin methacryloyl bioink in two-step cross-linking strategy for tissue engineering applications

Mohsen Janmaleki et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of thermoreversible physical crosslinking on the printability of GelMA, revealing that decreasing the extrusion temperature improves filament formation and shape fidelity of the deposited hydrogel. Mechanical testing and rheological studies confirm that lowering the extrusion temperature enhances the elastic properties of the extruded filaments. By utilizing various analysis methods, it is shown that the extruded samples printed at lower temperatures exhibit higher solid behavior and reduced porosity, with changes in linear and non-linear viscoelastic properties.

Macropore design of tissue engineering scaffolds regulates mesenchymal stem cell differentiation fate

W. Benton Swanson et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that scaffold pore size plays a crucial role in regulating the fate of mesenchymal cells, with sufficiently large pores promoting bone formation and small pores maintaining stemness to prevent differentiation. The geometry of scaffold pores is identified as a key factor in determining cell and tissue fate, providing a novel design motif for controlling tissue regenerative processes.

Viscoelastic behavior of covalently crosslinked hydrogels under large shear deformations: An approach to eliminate wall slip

Milad Kamkar et al.

Summary: The linear and nonlinear viscoelastic properties of hydrogels have a significant impact on their functionality, long-term performance, and stability. Most publications on chemically crosslinked hydrogels have reported a type III response, but this study found that by eliminating wall slip errors, hydrogels actually exhibit a type II (strain hardening) response. This insight has important implications for the future development of hydrogel-based materials.
