The Effect of Heat Accumulation on the Local Grain Structure in Laser-Directed Energy Deposition of Aluminium

Christian Hagenlocher et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changes in temperature field during L-DED process using infrared imaging and analyzes the impact on local grain structure of fabricated parts. It is found that power and layer deposition frequency are key parameters for adjusting heat accumulation. These findings offer a methodology for optimizing L-DED manufacturing processes and controlling local microstructure development.

In-situ digital image correlation and thermal monitoring in directed energy deposition additive manufacturing

James Haley et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method that combines stereo digital image correlation with infrared thermography to measure and record surface information and thermomechanical history of printed parts in powder-blown laser DED system in real time. This method addresses the unique temporal artifacts induced by complex scan strategies in DED additive manufacturing, providing a relatively low-cost solution for monitoring and optimizing the process.

Effect of thermal cycling on microstructure and mechanical properties of 2A97 Al-Li alloy fabricated by direct laser deposition

Rui Chen et al.

Summary: Direct laser deposition is a potential method for preparing large-scale metal components, with the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of 2A97 Al-Li alloy fabricated by DLD being influenced by the deposition direction. The thermal cycle caused different kinds and distribution of precipitated phases along the deposition direction, affecting microhardness and tensile strength. Ultimately, the sample at the bottom showed lower microhardness and tensile strength compared to the samples at the middle and top.

Process Window for Highly Efficient Laser-Based Powder Bed Fusion of AlSi10Mg with Reduced Pore Formation

Artur Leis et al.

Summary: The optimal processing window for a highly efficient LPBF process, producing AlSi10Mg components with low porosity, is determined by the ratio P-L/d(b) of incident laser power and the beam diameter on the surface of the bead. This optimum window falls within P-L/d(b)=2000-5200 W/mm, showing process efficiencies of about 7-8%.
