Molecular markers and SEM imaging reveal pseudocryptic diversity within the Ponto-Caspian low-profile amphipod invader Dikerogammarus bispinosus

H. Morhun et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of three independent lineages of the Ponto-Caspian amphipod Dikerogammarus bispinosus, each with distinct molecular and morphological characteristics. It was found that D. bispinosus is a native species in the Caspian region, contrary to previous beliefs. The study highlights the importance of further research to fully understand the evolutionary history and taxonomy of this species complex.

A DNA barcode reference library for endemic Ponto-Caspian amphipods

Denis Copilas-Ciocianu et al.

Summary: The Ponto-Caspian region is a hotspot for endemic species, with the most diverse group being amphipods. This study used DNA barcoding to classify nearly 60% of known Ponto-Caspian amphipod species and compared the results with morphology-based taxonomy. The findings indicate that DNA barcoding is valuable for clarifying the diversity of Ponto-Caspian amphipods, but further work is needed to resolve taxonomic uncertainties.

A subterranean adaptive radiation of amphipods in Europe

Spela Borko et al.

Summary: The study presented evidence for a large adaptive radiation of the subterranean amphipod genus Niphargus, indicating that multiple subordinate adaptive radiations make up the major adaptive radiation, which originated around 15 million years ago in association with the uplift of carbonate massifs in South-Eastern Europe.

Decline of unique Pontocaspian biodiversity in the Black Sea Basin: A review

Aleksandre Gogaladze et al.

Summary: The unique aquatic Pontocaspian biota of the Black Sea Basin is declining, primarily due to human activities such as damming of rivers, habitat modifications, pollution, invasive species, and climate change. Certain regions still contain favorable ecological conditions for Pontocaspian communities and threatened endemic species. Standardized data collection and precise definition of habitats are crucial for targeted conservation efforts to protect this unique biota.
