Spray Behavior, Combustion, and Emission Characteristics of Jet Propellant-5 and Biodiesel Fuels with Multiple Split Injection Strategies

Hyun Min Baek et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the spray behavior, combustion, and emission characteristics of JP-5 and biodiesel fuels in a CRDI diesel engine system. It found that retarding the injection timing improves engine performance and combustion efficiency while reducing CO and NOx emissions. Biodiesel performs worse than JP-5 in terms of combustion and emissions. The quadruple-injection strategy shows excellent combustion and engine performance.

Hydraulic characterization of a second-generation common rail injector operating under solo and split injection strategies

Vu H. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the hydraulic behavior of a second generation common-rail solenoid injector operating under split-injection strategy in terms of injection rate and injected volume. It is found that while the standard deviation of injection rates and injected volume is quite small for isolated injection events, the shot-to-shot deviation for split-injection mode can be significantly higher.

New insight into air/spray boundary interaction for diesel and biodiesel fuels under different fuel temperatures

Ali Jabbarzadeh Ghandilou et al.

Summary: Numerical studies show that low temperature biodiesel spray injection induces more air entrainment to the spray boundary compared to diesel and high temperature biodiesel spray. The normalized parcel density for biodiesel is 12% larger than diesel and peaks at a shorter distance from the injection point.

Effect of Moringa oleifera biodiesel-diesel-carbon black water emulsion blends in diesel engine characteristics

Selvakumar Ramalingam et al.

Summary: Day to day fuel prices are increasing due to fossil fuel depletion, industrialization, and technological development. This research investigates the impact of Moringa oleifera biodiesel-diesel-carbon black water emulsion blends on diesel engine characteristics. Experimental studies reveal that the B20-D75-CBWE5 mixture has the lowest fuel consumption and the highest thermal efficiency. B100 has the highest fuel consumption, but produces the least carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, and unburned hydrocarbon emissions at full load.

Comparison of engine characteristics with biodiesels produced from fresh and waste cooking oils

Abin Mathew et al.

Summary: The study suggests that using biodiesel produced from waste cooking oil (WCO) in automotive engines can reduce carbon monoxide and smoke emissions, but may slightly increase nitrogen oxide emissions. Additionally, there is almost no difference in engine performance between WCO biodiesel and fresh sunflower oil biodiesel.

A review on biofuels for light-duty vehicles in Europe

S. Puricelli et al.

Summary: The European transport sector is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and biofuels are being explored as a way to reduce these emissions. In 2017, biofuels accounted for 4.5% of energy consumption in road transport and non-road mobile machinery, with biodiesel being the most consumed biofuel at 62% in the EU. Several studies have shown that biofuels generally have lower climate change impacts compared to diesel and petrol, with different types of biofuels offering varying levels of emission savings. Land use change effects are an important consideration, with the need to focus on non-edible feedstocks, waste, and by-products to minimize risks associated with land use change. European legislation is also working towards promoting the use of these more sustainable biofuel sources.

Biofuels and its spray interactions under pilot-main injection strategy

Oscar A. de la Garza et al.

Summary: An experimental study investigated the effect of pilot and main injection strategies on the spray characteristics of biodiesels from different feedstocks. The results showed that most biodiesels had lower spray cone angles and areas compared to ULSD, but higher spray tip penetrations. Liquid expulsion was observed during the dwell period between injections and at the end of main injection for all fuels.

Effect of split injection and injection pressure on CRDI engine fuelled with POME-diesel blend

P. Pavan et al.

Summary: The experimental investigation demonstrated that a 40% reduction in NO emission was observed by introducing 10% pilot fuel and higher injection pressure at 32°bTDC compared with single injection mode at 23°bTDC. Smoke, HC, and CO emissions were found to be lower at 34°bTDC by 26.2%, 19.2%, and 21.5% respectively, with the same strategy. A slight increase in CO2 emission by 1.62% was noticed at 500 bar injection pressure at this injection timing compared to single injection mode.

Converting waste cooking oil to biodiesel in China: Environmental impacts and economic feasibility

Yuanhao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the environmental impacts and economic competitiveness of biodiesel production from waste cooking oil in China using life cycle assessment and life cycle cost modeling. The results showed that compared to conventional fossil diesel, waste cooking oil-based biodiesel has lower endpoint environmental impacts but higher impacts on climate change and other factors. The life cycle cost of the biodiesel is mainly influenced by waste cooking oil collection.
