Seagrass contributes substantially to the sedimentary lignin pool in an estuarine seagrass meadow

Masatoshi Nakakuni et al.

Summary: Shallow coastal ecosystems store carbon from external and internal sources, with significant contributions from degraded allochthonous vascular plants and seagrass. Organic biomarkers in sediment provide insights into the composition, origins, and decomposition of organic carbon. Vertical variations in organic biomarkers highlight differences in the degradation of organic compounds and the selective preservation of lignin phenols.
