Ensuring future agricultural sustainability in China utilizing an observationally validated nutrient recommendation approach

Ping He et al.

Summary: The study developed an innovative nutrient recommendation approach, Nutrient Expert (NE), to optimize fertilizer use and improve crop yield, particularly for maize, wheat, and rice in China. NE outperformed current farmer practices and soil test-based fertilizer application in terms of yield improvement, profit increase, and reduced nitrogen losses and greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate and agronomy, not genetics, underpin recent maize yield gains in favorable environments

Gonzalo Rizzo et al.

Summary: This study analyzed data from the largest irrigated maize production area in Nebraska, United States, and found that climate change, agronomic improvements, and genetic potential improvement contributed 48%, 39%, and 13% respectively to yield increases in major food crops. These findings highlight the need to reevaluate the contributions to yield advances and prioritize future research and development.

Zero tillage has important consequences for soil pore architecture and hydraulic transport: A review

D. Luke R. Wardak et al.

Summary: This paper reviews 34 studies that demonstrate the influence of zero-tillage (ZT) on porosity, depending on soil texture, pore size class, and depth. ZT can also affect important transport mechanisms that impact the fate of agrochemicals in soils, although the effects on hydraulic transport are less clear.

Summary: Limited adoption of advanced technologies and land fragmentation limit the sustainable intensification of agriculture in developing countries. By combining public-private partnership and large-scale farming, more profitable and sustainable agricultural production can be achieved with reduced environmental footprints.

Synthesis of a slow-release fertilizer composite derived from waste straw that improves water retention and agricultural yield

Weishuai Wang et al.

Summary: A novel semi-interpenetrating polymer network fertilizer was prepared from waste straw cellulose and linear polymer to improve fertilizer efficiency. The product exhibited excellent water absorbency, enhanced soil water-retention capacity, and met European standards for nutrient release, while also promoting wheat growth.

Super absorbent polymers mitigate drought stress in corn (Zea mays L.) grown under rainfed conditions

Ahmed M. AbdAllah et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of three K-based SAPs as water reservoirs during periods of drought in humid subtropical climates. The results showed that these SAPs can reduce rainwater transport, increase soil water storage, and enhance plant growth under rainfed conditions, suggesting that SAPs soil amendment is a potential approach to mitigate drought stress.

Estimation of Nitrogen Supply for Summer Maize Production through a Long-Term Field Trial in China

Shaohui Huang et al.

Summary: Supplying adequate nitrogen to meet crop demand is crucial for enhancing agricultural sustainability. Proper nitrogen supply can be established by correlating with relative yield, N input and output, and N use efficiency. Appropriate nitrogen supply values range from 325 to 497 kg ha(-1) for summer maize production, ensuring sufficient nitrogen supply for higher yields and reducing environmental nitrogen loss.

Optimizing wheat production and reducing environmental impacts through scientist-farmer engagement: Lessons from the North China Plain

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study combines participatory research through the Science and Technology Backyards (STB) approach with Pareto-based ranking modeling to increase smallholder production while reducing environmental impact. Findings from an intensive farmer survey in Quzhou County show that farmers engaged in STBs perform better in optimizing grain yield, benefit-cost ratio, and GHG emissions compared to non-STB farmers. The use of a Pareto optimization approach further demonstrates the potential for sustainable wheat production by improving economic and environmental outcomes without compromising yield.
