Neutral and Selective Processes Shape MHC Diversity in Roe Deer in Slovenia

Elena Buzan et al.

Summary: This study assesses the variability of MHC genes in roe deer in Slovenia and discovers new alleles. Evidence of historical positive selection is also found. The study provides a basis for further research on immunogenetic variation in roe deer and highlights opportunities to incorporate genetic data into population management.

A novel workflow to improve genotyping of multigene families in wildlife species: An experimental set-up with a known model system

Mark A. F. Gillingham et al.

Summary: Genotyping complex multigene families in novel systems is challenging, with factors such as relationship between artefacts and genotype complexity affecting accuracy. The use of ACACIA pipeline showed higher allele calling accuracy compared to the AmpliSAS pipeline. Our study demonstrates pitfalls to avoid when genotyping complex multigene families.

Evolution of innate and adaptive immune genes in a non-model waterbird, the common tern

Piotr Minias et al.

Summary: This study compared the variation in innate and adaptive immune genes in common terns, finding differences in allelic richness and sequence divergence between Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) genes. The MHC alleles showed greater sequence divergence and more sites under positive selection compared to TLRs, with MHC class II showing stronger signatures of positive selection and recombination than MHC class I. The results suggest that mechanisms maintaining variation at the MHC may vary between different classes of MHC genes.
