Suckling behavior of calves in seasonally calving pasture-based dairy systems, and possible environmental and management factors affecting suckling behaviors

E. L. Cuttance et al.

Summary: This study investigated the suckling behavior of calves left on pasture and identified potential risk factors contributing to the variability seen. The results showed that 63.7% of observed calves suckled in the calving paddock, with 58.4% of them suckling within the first 6 hours after birth. Individual risk factors included time to standing and age of the dam, while farm risk factors included frequency of calf collection and temperature.

Prevalence of failure of passive transfer of immunity in dairy calves in a Mediterranean pasture-based production system of the south-west region of Western Australia

J. W. Aleri et al.

Summary: The prevalence of failure of passive transfer of immunity (FPTI) in dairy calves in the south-west region of Western Australia was found to be 8.7%, with higher correlation between RID test results and STP results compared to RID and brix refractometer results. The brix refractometer is not a reliable method for determining passive transfer of immunity to calves.

Colostrum source and passive immunity transfer in dairy bull calves

Do T. Hue et al.

Summary: This study compared the absorption of nutrients from colostrum in different sources in newborn dairy bull calves, finding that calves receiving identical colostrum from the same cow had similar IgG levels, and even the pooled colostrum provided sufficient transfer of IgG when fed within 4 hours after birth.
