Otolith Analyses Highlight Morpho-Functional Differences of Three Species of Mullet (Mugilidae) from Transitional Water

Claudio D'Iglio et al.

Summary: This study investigates the inter- and intra-specific variability of sagittae in Mugilidae fish using morphological and morphometrical analysis, as well as scanning electron microscopy and shape analysis. The results show morphometrical differences among species and slight differences between left and right sagittae in certain individuals. Additionally, SEM images reveal a unique crystal organization with various crystal habits and polymorphs.

Water Quality Problems Analysis and Assessment of the Ecological Security Level of the Transboundary Ural-Caspian Basin of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Nariman Amirgalievich Amirgaliev et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the water quality analysis and assessment of the Ural River and the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea, which are transboundary water bodies between Russia and Kazakhstan. The results reveal heavy contamination of the Ural River by pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls, heavy metals, oil contaminants, and pesticides, originating from industrial activities and agriculture. The Caspian Sea is heavily polluted by petroleum hydrocarbons from offshore oil production, leading to a significant accumulation of pollutants in the muscles of fish. These contaminants have adverse effects on biodiversity and bio-productivity. The study proposes a methodology for quantitatively evaluating environmental safety in the Kazakh part of the Caspian Sea and puts forward recommendations for maintaining acceptable water quality.

Bioaccumulation and potential human health risks of metals in commercially important fishes and shellfishes from Hangzhou Bay, China

Md Abu Noman et al.

Summary: This study investigates the bioaccumulation of metals in commercially important fishes and shellfishes in Hangzhou Bay and evaluates the potential human health hazards posed by their consumption. The results show that while some metal concentrations exceed guideline values, most are within the safe range. Children are more susceptible to metal contamination than adults, and certain species can be detrimental to consumers.

Spatiotemporal evaluation of water quality and risk assessment of heavy metals in the northern Caspian Sea bounded by Kazakhstan

Elmira Ramazanova et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the contamination state of the Caspian Sea in Kazakhstan and assess the human health risks associated with heavy metals concentration. The results revealed that the Caspian Sea is moderately contaminated, with increasing concentrations of heavy metals near oil fields and ports. Anthropogenic sources were found to play a significant role in causing pollution events. The contamination was associated with up to 6% cancer risk for adults.

Bioaccumulation of heavy metals in fish species of Iran: a review

Hassan Sheikhzadeh et al.

Summary: Accumulation of heavy metals in fish tissues is crucial for monitoring the health of aquatic ecosystems, especially in edible parts of fish. Studies have shown that fish collected from the Persian Gulf have the highest concentrations of heavy metals, followed by species from the Caspian Sea. Fish species inhabiting the lower zone of the water column and those that are carnivorous or omnivorous tend to have higher levels of heavy metals, with the liver being the main accumulator organ.

Metals associated neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease: Insight to physiological, pathological mechanisms and management

Khadga Raj et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder caused by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, possibly influenced by exposure to heavy metals and trace elements. These metals can enter the brain and lead to dopaminergic neuronal damage, triggering oxidative stress and protein accumulation.

Distribution, sources, and ecological risks of potentially toxic elements in the Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea: Under the long-term impact of the Yellow River input

Pan Dang et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of PTEs in sediments decreased from the Yellow River Estuary to the inner Laizhou Bay due to the long-term impact of the Yellow River. Three potential sources were identified through principal component analysis: natural origins, coastal anthropogenic activities, and marine production. Among the PTEs, Cd was the most significant contaminant and was also the most sensitive factor in evaluating ecological risk.
