Mutations in the nAChR β1 subunit and overexpression of P450 genes are associated with high resistance to thiamethoxam in melon aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover

Huihui Zhang et al.

Summary: The highly resistant strain TMXR of melon aphids showed mutations in nAChR beta 1 subunit, decreased expression levels of the gene, and higher expression levels of P450s genes compared to susceptible strains. The involvement of nAChRs and CYP450s in the resistance mechanisms were highlighted, suggesting potential targets for overcoming insecticide resistance in Aphis gossypii.

Inheritance and fitness cost of buprofezin resistance in a near-isogenic, field-derived strain and insecticide resistance monitoring of Laodelphax striatellus in China

Bin Zeng et al.

Summary: Chinese field populations of Laodelphax striatellus developed high-level buprofezin resistance within the first four years. The resistance was stable for about ten years and persisted even when buprofezin selection pressure was absent. Low-level resistance to several other insecticides was also detected, while nitenpyram and triflumezopyrim showed no resistance.

Effects of sublethal concentrations of cyantraniliprole on the biology and metabolic enzyme activities of Laodelphax striatellus (Fallen)

Xueting Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to sublethal concentrations of cyantraniliprole led to reduced survival rate and hatchability of the small brown planthopper (SBPH). It also prolonged the nymphal duration and shortened the adult preoviposition period. The increase in detoxification enzyme activity may contribute to the development of insecticide resistance. This research provides valuable insights for managing resistant SBPH populations.

Complete sequence and genetic characterization of a novel insect-specific reovirus discovered from Laodelphax striatellus

Gang Lu et al.

Summary: A novel reovirus-like virus named Laodelphax striatellus reovirus (LSRV) was identified in the small brown planthopper, L. striatellus. LSRV was widely distributed in various tissues of the planthopper, with the highest expression in adult heads. However, LSRV was unable to replicate in rice plants. Host antiviral RNA interference pathway was found to be involved in LSRV infection. LSRV may be considered as a new species of the genus Fijivirus in the order Reovirales.

Cloning and Functional Analysis of Calcineurin Subunits A and B in Development and Fecundity of Nilaparvata lugens (Stal)

Wang Weixia et al.

Summary: This study revealed the importance of serine/threonine phosphatase calcineurin (CN) in the regulation of growth and development in Nilaparvata lugens. Silencing of NlCNA, NlCNB1, and NlCNBH1 genes resulted in a drastic reduction in survival rate, female weight, eclosion rate, and fecundity of the insects. NlCNA was found to be involved in the insect's immune response by regulating phenoloxidase, while NlCNB1 appeared to control growth and development through the 20E signaling pathway.

Carboxylesterase genes in nitenpyram-resistant brown planthoppers,Nilaparvata lugens

Kaikai Mao et al.

Summary: Carboxylesterases (CarEs) are an important detoxification enzyme family in insecticide resistance, with specific genes in the insect Nilaparvata lugens being identified and shown to be induced by various insecticides. Tissue-specific expression analysis showed certain CarE genes are highly expressed in the midgut and fat body, while others are more highly expressed in the head. The NlCarE1 gene was identified as a main candidate gene for nitenpyram resistance, with evidence suggesting a cooperative relationship with NlCarE19 in resistance formation. These findings provide a foundation for further understanding of insecticide resistance mediated by CarE in N. lugens.

Summary: The study found that sublethal doses of TFM significantly affected the life table parameters, oviposition, and fecundity of SBPH, as well as the emergence rate of adults. In addition, insects treated with sublethal doses of TFM had longer developmental durations and adult life spans.

Current resistance status of the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (Stal) to commonly used insecticides in China and Bangladesh

Juel Datta et al.

Summary: The study revealed high levels of resistance in Chinese populations of Nilaparvata lugens to imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, while the first report of insecticide resistance in Bangladesh showed similarly high levels of resistance to these insecticides. Significant differences in resistance levels to certain insecticides between the two countries were observed in 2020.

Insecticide resistance and resistance mechanisms in the melon aphid, Aphis gossypii, in Shandong, China

Zi-Jian Wang et al.

Summary: Levels of resistance to imidacloprid, acetamiprid, and lambda-cyhalothrin varied among 20 populations of melon aphids. Mutations in the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor gene were detected in some populations with moderate resistance. Upregulation of certain detoxification enzyme genes was observed in multiple resistant populations. These findings provide valuable insights for developing more effective resistance management strategies for A. gossypii.

Enantioselective bioaccumulation and detoxification mechanisms of earthworms (Eisenia fetida) exposed to mandipropamid

Kuan Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the enantioselective bioaccumulation and detoxification mechanisms of mandipropamid isomers in earthworms. The results showed that detoxification systems play an essential role in the stress response to mandipropamid exposure, with earthworms being more sensitive to S-(+)-mandipropamid than R-(-)-mandipropamid. Additionally, differentially expressed genes related to detoxification pathways were identified, providing insights for remediating chiral pollutants.

Identification and Characterization Analysis of Transient Receptor Potential Mucolipin Protein of Laodelphax striatellus Fallen

Haitao Wang et al.

Summary: Transient receptor potential mucolipin (TRPML) protein is crucial for Ca2+ ions release and plays roles in membrane trafficking, autophagy and ion homeostasis. In this study, we identified and characterized the TRPML protein in the small brown planthopper Laodelphax striatellus, revealing its evolutionary conservation and predominant expression in the ovary. The localization of Ls-TRPML in different cellular compartments and its lipid-binding characteristics were also elucidated, providing insights into the functions of TRPML in agricultural pests.
