Massive gene rearrangements of mitochondrial genomes and implications for the phylogeny of Trichoptera (Insecta)

Xinyu Ge et al.

Summary: This study obtained new mitogenomes for 66 species of Trichoptera through high-throughput sequencing, documenting the mitogenomes of 19 families and 47 genera for the first time. A total of 14 novel gene rearrangement patterns in Trichoptera were discovered, including rearrangements of protein-coding genes, tRNAs, and control regions. Evidence for tandem duplication and non-random loss events in the mitogenomes of three families was also provided. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the relationship between Hydroptilidae and Annulipalpia. The increased nucleotide substitution rate and adaptive evolution may have influenced the mitochondrial gene rearrangements in Trichoptera. This study offers new insights into the mechanisms and patterns of mitogenome rearrangements in insects, as well as the usefulness of mitogenomic gene order as a phylogenetic marker within Trichoptera.

Testing the systematic status of Homalictus and Rostrohalictus with weakened cross-vein groups within Halictini (Hymenoptera: Halictidae) using low-coverage whole-genome sequencing

Dan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the phylogenetic relationships within the subgroups of Lasioglossum based on genetic markers and elements, and found that Lasioglossum and Hemihalictus are monophyletic, while Homalictus and Rostrohalictus are subgenera of Lasioglossum. Homalictus was downgraded to subgenus status, and Rostrohalictus was raised to subgenus status. The study also redefined Lasioglossum to include all halictine bees with weakened distal wing venation.

Positive Correlation of the Gene Rearrangements and Evolutionary Rates in the Mitochondrial Genomes of Thrips (Insecta: Thysanoptera)

Qiaoqiao Liu et al.

Summary: Aeolothrips, or banded thrips, is the largest genus in the family Aeolothripidae. The mitochondrial genome of Aeolothrips xinjiangensis shows a novel gene arrangement that differs from other Thysanoptera. Gene rearrangement patterns vary significantly across different thrips species, but overall tend to be stable. The mitogenome of Aeolothrips xinjiangensis has unique characteristics like a length of 16,947 bp, a different gene arrangement, and a novel conserved gene block trnC-trnY.

Comparative Mitogenomic Analysis of Heptageniid Mayflies (Insecta: Ephemeroptera): Conserved Intergenic Spacer and tRNA Gene Duplication

Ran Li et al.

Summary: Heptageniidae is one of the most abundant and widespread families of mayflies, with ancient mitochondrial genome features. The research findings shed light on its phylogenetic relationships and genetic evolution mechanisms. The mitochondrial genomes of Heptageniidae offer new molecular markers for species identification.

The Mitochondrial Genomes of 18 New Pleurosticti (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) Exhibit a Novel trnQ-NCR-trnI-trnM Gene Rearrangement and Clarify Phylogenetic Relationships of Subfamilies within Scarabaeidae

Sam Pedro Galilee Ayivi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on sequencing and analyzing 18 new phytophagous Scarabaeidae mitochondrial genomes to contribute to understanding the phylogenetic relationships within this family. The availability of next-generation sequencing has greatly improved the accessibility of mitochondrial genome sequences, which are powerful tools for comparative studies and resolving insect lineage relationships.

Mitochondrial genomes within bark lice (Insecta: Psocodea: Psocomorpha) reveal novel gene rearrangements containing phylogenetic signal

Oscar Fernando Saenz Manchola et al.

Summary: Psocodea is an order of insects with extensive mitochondrial genome rearrangements, particularly in the Troctomorpha suborder. Some families within the order show mitochondrial gene rearrangements, possibly related to transpositions and inversions of tRNAs. Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial gene sequences provides resolution for several branches of the tree.
