Dominican amber net-winged beetles suggest stable paleoenvironment as a driver for conserved morphology in a paedomorphic lineage

Vinicius S. Ferreira et al.

Summary: Paedomorphosis is a syndrome that affects the morphology and speciation rates of organisms, such as insects. In the case of beetles, paedomorphosis is hypothesized to increase speciation rates. However, some fossil records do not support this hypothesis. The discovery of fossils related to the paedomorphic genus Cessator suggests morphological stability within this genus in the Greater Antilles.

Revisiting the Raractocetus Fossils from Mesozoic and Cenozoic Amber Deposits (Coleoptera: Lymexylidae)

Yan-Da Li et al.

Summary: A new examination suggests that the four fossils previously assigned to the lymexylid genus Raractocetus are morphologically separated from extant Raractocetus and should be removed from the genus. Additionally, fossils assigned to Raractocetus Kurosawa from amber deposits in different eras also differ from extant Raractocetus and should be removed from the genus. Furthermore, it was found that Cretoquadratus engeli Chen and R. fossilis Yamamoto are conspecific.

Genomics Reveals Exceptional Phylogenetic Diversity Within a Narrow-Range Flightless Insect

Graham A. McCulloch et al.

Summary: Range-restricted upland species with low genetic diversity are susceptible to environmental change. This study used genotyping-by-sequencing and mitochondrial COI sequencing to identify genetic structure in the narrow-range flightless stonefly Zelandoperla maungatuaensis. Three distinct lineages were found within the species, suggesting divergence in the early-mid Pleistocene. The results highlight the role of secondary flight loss in insect diversification and the importance of considering genetic diversity beyond range size.

Sexually dimorphic characters and shared aposematic patterns mislead the morphology-based classification of the Lycini (Coleoptera: Lycidae)

Dominik Kusy et al.

Summary: A study on the Lycidae family conducted phylogenetic analysis, rejecting the polyphyletic assemblages of Lycus and Lycostomus, and redefined the classification of certain genera. Aposematic patterns evolved in different lineages, and high intraspecific polymorphism is influenced by local mimetic assemblages.

High resolution DNA barcode library for European butterflies reveals continental patterns of mitochondrial genetic diversity

Vlad Dinca et al.

Summary: Access to comprehensive DNA barcode libraries at continental scale is crucial for the study of global biodiversity. The assembly of a high-resolution reference library for European butterflies provides valuable insights into haplotype diversity and the need for further taxonomic research. This dataset opens up new opportunities for conservation, evolutionary studies, and understanding biogeographic patterns in European butterflies.

Phylogenomic and mitogenomic data can accelerate inventorying of tropical beetles during the current biodiversity crisis

Michal Motyka et al.

Summary: The study utilized integrative phylogenomic and three mtDNA fragment analyses to sequence a beetle fauna, revealing many previously unknown species. Additionally, through constrained mtDNA analysis, a biodiversity hotspot and high species-level endemism were identified in New Guinea. Focused field research and subsequent laboratory work were recommended to accelerate the inventorying of hyperdiverse tropical groups.

Summary: A new genus and five new species of neotenic lyropaeine net-winged beetles are described from Malaysia and Indonesia. Additionally, a synonym relationship between Horakiella Bocakova and Atamania Kazantsev is proposed, and descriptions of little known species in the subfamily are complemented with macrophotographs.

Murcybolus gen. nov., a new net-winged beetle genus from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber (Coleoptera: Lycidae: Burmolycini)

Yan-Da Li et al.

Summary: A new lycid beetle, Murcybolus longiantennus gen. et sp. nov., discovered in mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber, is classified in the recently established fossil tribe Burmolycini. Murcybolus differs from the other genus in Burmolycini, Burmolycus, in terms of antennal morphology and elytral venation.

Conspicuousness, phylogenetic structure, and origins of Mullerian mimicry in 4000 lycid beetles from all zoogeographic regions

Michal Motyka et al.

Summary: Biologists have studied the chemical defences and phenetic similarity of net-winged beetles and their co-mimics. The research illustrates the appearance and distribution of hundreds of lycid species and their co-mimics, as well as their evolutionary patterns using a transcriptomic backbone. The study reveals the evolution of aposematic patterns and the complex mimetic communities in different regions.
