Increasing fire frequency and severity will increase habitat loss for a boreal forest indicator species

Eric C. Palm et al.

Summary: Climate change will lead to more frequent and severe fires in boreal forests, affecting caribou populations. Caribou in winter and at larger scales tend to avoid burns more strongly, while they decrease their avoidance in summer. They strongly avoid severely burned areas and select higher lichen cover within burns.

Indigenous-led conservation: Pathways to recovery for the nearly extirpated Klinse-Za mountain caribou

Clayton T. Lamb et al.

Summary: Indigenous Peoples in the northern hemisphere have relied on caribou for subsistence for a long time. However, caribou populations in Canada are currently declining. The West Moberly First Nations and Saulteau First Nations came together to create a vision for caribou recovery. Through habitat protection and predator reduction, the Klinse-Za caribou population has more than doubled in recent years, and a landmark conservation agreement has been secured.

Lowering the rate of timber harvesting tomitigate impacts of climate change on boreal caribou habitat quality in eastern Canada

Martin-Hugues St-Laurent et al.

Summary: This study evaluated how climate change will affect boreal caribou habitat, finding that it may lead to a decrease in habitat quality, a reduction in high-quality habitat, and a northward recession of suitable habitat. Timber harvesting was found to be the most important factor of change for the 2030-2050 horizon, although it may be replaced by changes in fire regime by 2100.

Using bias correction and ensemble modelling for predictive mapping and related uncertainty: A case study in digital soil mapping

Jean-Daniel Sylvain et al.

Summary: The study combines bias correction and ensemble modeling to improve the accuracy of digital soil mapping, reduce conditional bias, and provide uncertainty assessment. The performance of ensemble modeling surpasses individual models and underdispersion in uncertainty analysis is identified. Global mapping products show low performance and important conditional bias compared to the proposed approach.

Assessing Pathways of Climate Change Effects in SpaDES: An Application to Boreal Landbirds of Northwest Territories Canada

Summary: This study predicts that climate change will increase suitable habitat for 73% of landbird species, resulting in an average net gain of 7.49 million ha. While vegetation varied due to climate change in simulations, the impact on landbird habitat was relatively small.

Boreal forests will be more severely affected by projected anthropogenic climate forcing than mixedwood and northern hardwood forests in eastern Canada

Yan Boulanger et al.

Summary: The study modeled the impacts of climate change and harvesting on eastern Canada's forests, finding that the northern forest regions are more severely affected, mainly due to increased wildfire activity. In contrast, the mixedwood and northern hardwood regions experience less significant changes, primarily influenced by climate-induced growth constraints.

Determinants of vegetation regeneration on forest roads following restoration treatments: implications for boreal caribou conservation

Rebecca Lacerte et al.

Summary: The study assessed the short-term establishment of vegetation following four different treatments applied on forest roads in eastern Canada. The combination of closing the road to traffic, decompacting the soil, and planting black spruce trees was found to be the most effective treatment for establishing regeneration that would lead to suitable caribou habitat. The results suggest that decommissioning forest roads could benefit caribou populations, especially when done at a sufficiently broad scale and accompanied by other habitat restoration and protection practices.

Summary: This study demonstrates how the introduction of insect pests can impact predator-prey relationships among large mammals, potentially affecting the entire ecosystem. Human activities may also exacerbate these impacts.
