Efficient adsorption of methylene blue on carboxylate-rich hydrochar prepared by one-step hydrothermal carbonization of bamboo and acrylic acid with ammonium persulphate

Bo-Wen Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, hydrochar rich in carboxylate groups (AAHC) was prepared by one-step hydrothermal carbonization of bamboo and acrylic acid with the presence of ammonium persulphate, and then activated using a sodium hydroxide solution. Despite a small BET surface area of 5.03 m2g-1, AAHC showed excellent adsorption capacity for methylene blue due to the richness of carboxylate groups. Adding a small amount of ammonium persulfate played an important role in enhancing the BET surface, pore volume, and carboxylate groups of AAHC produced in HTC, indicating the effectiveness of the method combining HTC and polymerization for preparing carboxylate-rich hydrochar.

Effect of solvent and feedstock selection on primary and secondary chars produced via hydrothermal carbonization of food wastes

Matteo Pecchi et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization is a thermochemical process that converts wet waste biomass into hydrochar, a renewable solid fuel. The nature of the feedstock and choice of solvent can affect the amount and composition of primary and secondary char phases. Ethanol can extract liquid fuel precursors from lipid-rich feedstocks, while acetone and dichloromethane can remove oily secondary char and maximize primary char yield for substrates rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and lignocellulose.

Hydrothermal carbonization of rape straw: Effect of reaction parameters on hydrochar and migration of AAEMs

Chen Cheng et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization improves the biomass quality and energy yield of rape straw. The properties of hydrochars produced at different temperatures and residence times were investigated. The results showed that increasing temperature had a more significant effect on hydrochar properties than residence time. The hydrochar structure was changed and became more stable after the aromatization reaction. The gasification reactivity of hydrochar was also affected, with the peak of pyrolysis and gasification shifting to a higher temperature region. Furthermore, hydrothermal carbonization efficiently reduced the content of alkali and alkaline earth metals, with the best removal condition observed at 200°C.

Hydrothermal carbonization and pelletization of moistened wheat straw

Yan Yu et al.

Summary: This study explored the potential of using hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) with the inherent moisture of wheat straw to improve its characteristics and produce high-quality pellets. The results showed that treating the material at 220 degrees C for 30 minutes produced pellets with the lowest water adsorption, highest bulk density, and highest HHV. However, the ash content increased and durability decreased. On the other hand, treating the material at 140 degrees C for 30 minutes resulted in pellets with the highest durability and hardness, improved HHV, and unchanged ash content.

Summary: This study investigated the co-gasification of blended char of bituminous coal and rice straw at different temperatures and found that the interaction between the binary particles influenced the reactivity and kinetics during co-gasification. The synergistic effect was weaker at higher HTC and gasification temperatures, affecting the transformation of mineral matter and the chemical structure evolution.
